New member from Spain

Hi All, Xavier here, new to this forum.

I am a 54 yrs old musician (guitarist), big fan of Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Robben Ford , Eric Gales, Pat Metheny, mostly jazz / blues / rock players.

But I also started to become a it of an audio obsessed person. You know this happens when you are thinking about spending unreasonable amounts of money on a pair of very expensive capacitors, just to see what happens :)

I just purchased a couple of Wharfedale EVO 4.2 speakers and a Rega Brio amp, and while I am reasonably happy with the sound, I think the speakers do not have enough highs for my liking. I even installed REW and started some measurements.

My whole childhood was spent listening to an ungodly amount of classic jazz records, that my grandfather played through a couple of AR Systems 2AX speakers.

Oh well.......... I feel like I have been injected a virus for which I cannot forsee a cure :)

Welcome!

Your English is very good.  It's great that you had a childhood with lots of jazz and good that your higher frequency hearing is still good at your age.  Many enjoy the highs from ribbon tweeters.

Welcome to AudioCircle, Xavier!

Your grandfather got you off to a great start!

There is a GR Research Circle in this forum. Ask them if this EVO4.4 kit will work in your EVO4.2, or if they can adjust it to work for you. Using an upgrade kit that addresses the whole speaker and is voiced by an experienced speaker designer is far better than upgrading just the tweeter caps yourself.

October will be more merciful. Right now it's hell on earth there, they are easily reaching 45ºC !

I am located in Barcelona.

I've learned about GR research just recently. HI can see he is on a different league !

I am pretty much a DIY person and I have built quite a few guitar effect pedals (even a Neve preamp). I am not an engineer by any means, but I just like to open things up and mess with them until I like what I hear :).

I've been to Spain many times, but never to Barcelona.  One day I'll see that part of Spain.
45* in Malaga??  Wow.  I thought it was hot here in central Texas...

Welcome aboard Xavier!  You’ve come to the right place.
I lived in Rota for 3 years in the early 80’s.  I absolutely loved my time there.  Happy times and cheap beer!  I enjoyed visiting the North but Andalusia was for me.  I remember Sevilla being miserable in the summer months.  Rota’s population would double or triple during the summer as people left the interior for the coast.  Good memories!

Allan, I was stationed there from early 84 to late 86. I worked at the weather office across from the air traffic control tower. I used to hang out at the Schnitzelhaus down by the beach. I used to play foosball at Zeppelin's too. We may have bumped into each other without even knowing it. Great times!

Cheers!

So, linking Spain to our common hobby:

When in Spain, try not to buy black vinyl covered speakers, specially if your speaker is on top of a shelf under the sun.

I came back one night after a scorching hot day and the vinyl covering had peeled off like a banana. (Spirit Absolute Zero monitors)

I removed the remaining covering off the front and painted it white to match the rest of my Ikea furniture, so it wasn't that bad in the end.

PS: I have been in Texas as well, the above would be also valid. I remember being in places like Laredo and thinking how human life is possible there.

We had a foreign exchange student with us for a year that was from Barcelona.  He was very mature and brought a coffee table book of Barcelona, what a city!  We hope to visit him someday.

I was attached to VQ2 from 82-85.  Yeah, I spent my fair share of time on the foosball tables at Zeppelin’s!  I’d be surprised if we didn’t bumped into each other.
