Modding Revel M12
« on: 18 May 2023, 05:42 pm »
Hi All.

I recently bought a pair of these and I'm thinking about modding them.  I have some extra NoRez kicking around, so I think I'll line the cabinets with that.

I haven't opened them yet, but I found the attached photo of the crossover.  I'd like to put some bypass caps in.  It looks like it has a 20uf and an 18uf cap, which I'm guessing can be bypassed with two 0.01uf caps - although I'm not sure what the 20uf and the 18uf do separately.  I imagine they are both parts of the high pass filters?

Then it seems to have an 8.91 and a 2.21 F caps.  Are those Farads, as in 8.91 million uf?  I'm assuming these are the low pass crossovers for the woofers.  Are they worth bypassing?  What would they be bypassed with?

Thanks.

On that one, you are better off replicating the whole crossover with better parts and point to point wiring it. I would not try to reuse any of those parts or the wiring.

How much do you think that would run me?  I can take a better photo once I open it up.  Thanks.

For the two blue electrolytic caps should be swapped for budget polycaps, bypassing them wont be much of an improvement vs replacing them.
They are likely in the woofer circuit(s)

The two yellow caps are budget polycaps, F is an indication of 1% tolerance in this case not Farads, and they are in the tweeter circuit.
You can bypass them with 0.1uF bypass caps or upgrade them to higher quality caps like Sonicaps, Jantzen or Mundorf caps.

Then i would swap out the resistors for some good MOX or wire-wound options with the same or similar rating. Keep them 10-12W
5R3 = 5.3 ohm
7R3 = 7.3 ohm

Danny is correct, but we will need to have a crossover sent to us to map out the schematic and get the coil values.
