NX-Studio kit arrived!
« on: 22 Dec 2022, 07:20 pm »
After a long time of back and forth between X-Statix's and the NX Studio's I finally pulled the plug and found my new kit on my door step this morning.

Mostly for me, it was all about my room and having Open Baffle (OB) sound.  The family room is filled with daily life things (pictures, books, TV, computers, cats and the stereo). No sitting them out 4 feet from the wall here.

I can't tell you how many times I've read Hobbs build thread along with all the rest of them I could find. I'm still thinking about the upgrades I can do (Hobbs fault), even though currently, there are none available from GR Research. However, they are putting really good components in the base kit.

Still, I should be prepared for the future.  :D So should I make the component board fit on the outside, so it's easier to get too or can handle the larger components?  Probably. What about speaker stands? The small units with the bass woofer look good but are no longer being made. The double trouble would be a nice option for sure. But I'd really need two and my wallet is thin from XMAS stuff.

or

These are nice looking stands as well and would allow me to mount the crossover easily on the back of the stand. I've also seen some other really nice looking speaker stands in this forum that you all have created. So many choices.

Here's another nice setup...

So, where do I mount the cross over? Do I try veneer on the sides? And then there is all those amp kits, including this thread quoted below:

"...That said I did also get one of the early samples of the new 10W chip amps, just need to get a battery and charger to power it. We've had one of them playing in-house for a few days now and it honestly sounds fantastic, incredibly clean and detailed with excellent bass control. It's one of the few things Danny has said are one of the best sounding devices, esp for "right out of the box." I'll be pairing it with My Studios for sure..."

I know from building kit aircraft that you can't just change one thing. Everything impacts everything else. So let the fun begin!

Special thanks to Danny and the crew for getting the kit out so quickly and sitting on my front porch!

If it was me, I'd build a crossover box into the base of the stands.

Speaker stands? Forget about it!!! Focus solely on assembling a pair of double troubles because that's what you really want. Attach some gliders on the bottom so you can easily move them. Save your money, take your time, and buy 'em when you're ready. Oh, and definitely external crossovers with boutique parts!

Here is what I did. I can easily change out parts as I want to. And I like the way it looks.

Wayne, that is still one of the cleanest looking external crossovers I've seen.  :thumb:

As for stands Bob, I would suggest something decent and sturdy, fill them to the brim with sand, and place your studios on some Isoacoustics. I found that weighted stands and isolation do make a big difference with these. External crossover mounting is great if you plan to tinker with parts like Wayne or have oil barrel sized caps like Hobbs. Otherwise tuck them inside all safe and secure and call it a day.

Thank You nilt that means a lot to me  :thumb:

The stands are Monolith 28 Inch Speaker Stands filled with Chemsorb GA  General Absorbent 1 Gal. bag. I like like this stuff because it is nontoxic and works well to dampen the stands. I bolted the stands to the studios and run the spikes. I was worried about knocking the speakers off the stands because I have them so far out into the room and the sliding door to the deck is right next to the speaker.

I thought I had seen some pictures of this or something very like it. I agree, very clean! I might put covers over the X-over, just for the cats...

I agree about the double trouble...next?
