WTB -- A real good CD player with dac
« on: 1 Dec 2022, 11:22 pm »
:D I have a bunch of CDs.  My dac is an old Tranquility.  If I buy a spinner I could run it into the old dac ?  But a good newer CD player most likely has a better dac ?  I really don't know. Any help much appreciated indeed.
Thanks all good AC peeps.   :D

good timing! we are living in the golden age for cds.  discs and plentiful and cheap.  sooo much music is on cd - even quite a bit thats not on streaming, and probably never will be.   and cd players are also plentiful and cheap-ish, as people dump them to flock to streaming.

most cd players have digital outs so you can compare their internal dacs to your old dac.

not knowing your tastes or budget i'm not going to make any recommendations here.  but the cd listings on usaudiomart will offer plenty of options to investigate.

good luck and have some fun!

Without knowing your budget, consider Marantz, Cambridge Audio and Music Hall.  I owned each one of those brands.  All good and different-  Marantz SA8001, Cambridge Audio 850c, 750c, Music Hall 25.2

Rega Apollo is a fantastic sounding player, whether through a DAC or on its own.  The one in my system is hooked up to my Bel Canto DAC, but I could happily live with it directly into the preamp.

You should be able to find the original model for $400, give or take.

I'd highly recommend just making sure that the spinner has a digital out - which I assume that most cd players have. It's just better to compare for yourself. It's hard to know how much time and effort the manufacturer put into it.

perhaps a modwright modified player?  There are numerous makes/models to choose from.

Check out some of the older Marantz, Philips and Magnavox CD players as they made nice good sounding and reliable players. Also some of the Sony ES first gen and second gen DVD players make excellent CD players as they are built like tanks, have most of their chassis's clad in copper and can also later double as a transport.

I have been using an Emotiva ERC-4 for a couple of years, it is around $650, Just be aware it does not have gapless playback which is a dealbreaker for some, but it does play most every audio cd format. The DAC is good, I am using it as a transport to an external DAC, but I did use the internal DAC with no complaints.

Did you have a set budget to work with?

I just spotted an Ayre C-5xe MP universal player for sale for a very reasonable price (compared to new) at EchoHifi.
