Hello from Liechtenstein, Europe
« on: 21 Oct 2022, 09:07 am »
Hi everybody,
I just joined to have access to more info on GR Research speakers and DIY loudspeaker solutions.
Since my strength is computers and not carpenting, I am curious as to how to proceed
Regards, Martin

Welcome!

Suggest active monitors, as used in nearly all recording/mixing studios.  They can be reviewed at professional gear stores.  The active approach (more sophisticated low voltage cross-over feeds one channel of power amplification per driver for better amp/driver integration) is vastly superior (better dynamics and deeper bass) than regular consumer passive loudspeakers.  Nearly all use class D amps.  Consumer versions of active monitors are being introduced that include various options such as built in DAC's, room correction software, and wireless connections.

Wonderful lower priced models include 2-way JBL 305 Mk2 and 3-way Kali IN-8 v.2 that are "simple" (no wireless option, DAC, or room correction software).  Fully equipped is the more expensive and highly regarded Buchardt A500.

I also will sell my fish, you could try some DIY full range driver speaker if you have a handy woodworker to made a OB panel or a box:
https://www.lii-audio.com/product/recommended-15-full-range-speaker-driver-for-music-loudspeaker-with-tube-amplifier-f-15-in-pair/
Free plans:

As you can see this is a sole 15'' $399/pair FR driver direct from the amp what made it active as JLM speakers and fortunately there is no tweeter.

Thanks for the advice.

My current system will not expand into a active monitor solution. I am more looking into floorstanding passive loudspeakers of the level promised by the NX series.

I am really intrigued about the full range open baffle speaker solution

Have run single driver loudspeakers for 17 years but admit that there is no perfect loudspeaker (although my JBL 708P's, active monitors, were the best I've ever heard).  Single drivers can't quite cover the modernly defined "full" acoustic range (20-20,000 Hz) and larger drivers "beam" at higher frequencies (those shown by FullRangeMan start beaming around 2,000 Hz).  Of course single driver loudspeakers lack nasty cross-overs, differing voicing between drivers, and different source locations for multiple drivers for improved imaging.  My loudspeakers are no longer available but suit my tastes well.  O.B. have vastly different presentation than monitors (wall wide images, in FullRangeMan's case coming from the floor) and lack chest pounding deep bass.

Selling your current power amp and loudspeakers would allow for active monitors to fit in.  (If running a multiple channel system, you're right about mixing active and passive speakers.)

Suggest ditching/moving/lowering the gear/rack between loudspeakers as they block the sound stage (sound cannot occupy the same space as solid objects).  That's what I like about my simple system that uses tiny Temple Audio mono-blocks and one small box server/DAC.

They are more than interesting, til today I have not seen better value speakers, $399/pair are a bargain, I have friends that have pay top $ for vintage German drivers which are 8 to 12'' max.

They have a new more expensive 15'' version named Fast-15:
https://www.lii-audio.com/product/one-pair-15-inch-full-range-speakers-optimized-detail-frequency-response-and-soundstage-fast-15/

And also a 18 inches model for more bass and larger soundstage:
https://www.lii-audio.com/product/one-pair-18-inch-full-range-speakers-superb-scale-soundstage-with-new-imaging-f-18/
I believe some audiophiles may want add two active subs with the F-15 model in OB, however one can use the F-15 model in the recommended BR box in case of a small room or dont want use two subs.
The 15 and 18 FR have its companion woofer drivers for OB use.
