Just received a stock Toshiba SD-4960 (Samsung 841) for $47 new delivered.  Been breaking it in for about 3 days and I am very, very impressed with the redbook performance.  This player which has been heralded on this forum especially for it's mod potential is very capable in it's stk. form.

I can't comment on the other players or their prices but for $47 delivered I am thrilled so far with the Toshiba.  I will start breaking in the SACD very soon.  I am considering the mod but I have to evaluate the potential longevity of the transport before dropping any additional investment.

I hope you can get some input on the other models but if there is a model as good or better than the Toshiba at a great price you will make out like a bandit.  Hope that helps somewhat!!!   :D

How do you output the redbook audio? Using the player's DAC's?

If so, do you have popping? My Sammy 841 has random pops and dropouts in both analog and digital outputs (and it has the latest firmware).

Hey Wildfire,

I assume you were directing that question to me.  I have the SD-4960 connected to my RX-F10 JVC through the DVD Multi analog connections.  l am using the both the main and the discreet surround connections to take advantage of the DVD Multi connections.  Can't say I have noticed any popping as of yet but I will keep an ear out.  I have it playing continuously at lower volumes so I could be missing something.  I have only sampled it at higher volumes for an hour or two.  I do like what I hear so far and it is not even close to being broken in!!  I don't know other than aesthetics if anything is implemented differently in the Samsung v.s. the Toshiba.  They are basically the same player from all that I have read and heard.   I will continue to post as things progress. :D

Hey Brad and Double J,

I got it from HHGregg in Indy.  It was $59 the night before I ordered it but the next day when I went to order it,  they must have been having one of their notorious internet only specials or something and I got it for $47 delivered.  Might be one of the all time best buys I have ever made.  I was meaning to call them today to ask them what the deal was that day and whether it will be happening again anytime soon!!!  I might buy another one!!   You really can't go wrong either way but shaving off another $12 at that price point makes you feel extra good!!! :D

Hope you guys enjoy it if you end up ordering it!!  I have been extremely pleased during the short break in so far!!  Mods?  Boy I can hear how it could be a real giant killer modded.  Good Luck!!

That was where I found it.

$59 is really a good price anyway, especially when dealing with a decent vendor.

so I got a 4960 off ebay to try my hands at the fun of modding and I can't say I was too impressed with the stock unit. I don't think you will be very happy with it unmodded.
