Lydia Tár has it all, she is smart, beautiful and the well respected Principal Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. What happens next is devastating to watch. Tár is a dramatic and powerful take demand film. Some films softly envelope the audience and transport you to another time and place. Tár grabs you by the throat, pins you to the sofa and doesn't let go. With a running time of 2 hours 38 minutes I expected to get fidgety. We didn't move for the entire film, we were frozen in place, it demanded our full attention.

Classical music anesthesiologists and scholars will love the dialog, Lydia knows every nuance and reference in classical music while she also searches for the hidden unwritten truth in each composition. Describing her as intense would be an understatement.

The ending may be sad to some, I think of it a a new beginning. Polygon has a well written explanation of the ending but don't read it until you have watched the film, otherwise it would be like reading the last page of a crime novel first.

Bonus question: What are the speakers in Lydia's Berlin apartment?

I finally got around to watching this last night.

It's a very well made movie. But even so it was a little bit of a grind for the first half or so. It's a long movie. That's my only complaint. Overall I consider it a good movie and it earned some of the accolades it has received. I say that without having read in depth reasons why people like it, and I'll put some faith that it's the same reasons I did. This movie is something I can talk about with other movie buffs.

If you're wondering about how audiophile it is, well... clearly someone involved had a sort of understanding of audiophiles. To be clear it's WAY BEYOND the average person but still not accurate. I won't spoil it for you, you have to watch the near 3 hours to find out for yourself

I'll save the discussion till more people have had a chance to see it. I don't want to spoil a lot. I will say that an actual professional conductor might laugh at a few moment, it's possible, but hard to say. Recall the movie where JK Simmons is the conductor and the guy with the unrememberable name he should have changed drummed? I suspect that for us laymen we just don't know, but there are some in the know. Luckily even less people are conductors so we probably won't have to listen to them.
