I had the same exact problem with my Purist.
It's a quiet, nice sounding, supremely well costed, well made unit...but I could never get the volume attentuated right (Norh Multiamps, AudioSource Amp3) even on the 0 gain setting. Never.
It was fed by a MSB Gold Link III DAC that doesn't have especially strong outputs. I know 'cause with preamp removed the sound was less-than-totally deafening...as it can be when you run straight into an amp without attentuation. Speakers were 87db Lineaums and 90db Vandersteens.
I'm no lover of my tubed Dynaco PAS-4 preamp, but the volume attentuation at all levels was better than the Purist. Perhaps it did nothing else but THAT better than the Purist, but I saved my Dynaco and sold my Purist partly because of this (the other part was going to an all-in-one receiver).
