RP8000 upgrade kit questions
« on: 20 Feb 2022, 03:43 pm »
Hello, I'm new here. My name is Tom. I'm seriously thinking about ordering an upgrade kit for my RP8000's.
I would like to build the crossover's before I disassemble my speakers. My first question, what size board might work well? Is there a best material to use?
Should I hot glue and use tie-straps? I'm sure I will have other questions, but starting out slow. I've been reading through the forum.
Thanks,
Tom

The RP-8000 has lots of room inside so space is of little concern.  The last RP-8000 crossovers I assembled used a board of around 4" x9" which was plenty of room. That board accommodated the tweeter and upper woofer circuits.

The lower woofer circuit uses only a single iron core inductor which is large and heavy and can be mounted separately on its own board, or even secured directly to the floor of the cabinet.

Once you receive the components and get them layed out on the table in front of you, in your desired layout, you will know exactly how much space you need.  I see no benefit in cutting those out before having received your components and determined what layout you will use.

Regarding board material, I most frequently use 1/4" Baltic birch ply. Anything similar will work. I personally don't like to use mdf for crossover boards, but any other solid or plywood material, hardboard, should be fine.

Good luck with your project.

Thank you Elon, I’m going to order the kit if in stock, probably tomorrow once they open.

I ordered two kits this morning, One for my RP504C and one for RP8000F.
To remove the speakers, I'm assuming I need to pry off the trim rings? Any safe tips on removing these?

Get your fingernails up under the inside of the ring and gently pull up on the ring, working your way around the woofer & it should lift out pretty easily. Just be careful not to dent the woofers by using tools.

Thank you, I’ll try that method.
