Buzzing Speakers
« on: 4 Feb 2022, 12:37 am »
Hello All,

My name's George and I'm a newbie here.  This is my first introductory post.  I'm looking for some suggestions on what I can do to keep my speakers, on my two channel plus sub, stereo system from either buzzing or picking up radio stations.  I know some causes are long cable runs or running power cables near speaker cables.  Then there may be grounding issues.  I have two different systems right now.  On one system I have a turntable and a turntable amp both grounded to the same grounding post on the rear of my integrated amp.  This is what I think might be causing the buzz in my speakers.  So, I, wondering what may be the proper way to ground separate pieces of equipment within the same system.
On my other system, I started picking up radio stations when I introduced a new Schitt Lokius equalizer between the speaker outputs of my integrated tube amp and my speakers.  The cables running from the amp to the equalizer are 9' long.  So, any thoughts on a cure for that?

Thanks in advance,
George M

Sometimes invert the outlep pins may resolve at no cost.

Hello FullRangeMan,

Thanks for replying. I don't know what "invert the outlep pins" means, however.  Could you give me another explanation?

Thanks again,
George M

I suppose your power plug are not two pins as this:

If your power cable plug are 3 pins you will need invert the poles at the outlet.

Welcome!  Is a cable box in the system?  There's various articles about different issues - e.g. https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/grounding-rca-inputs.234533/    If you can disconnect one source at a time you can also see if connections or one device is the culprit.

Are the components plugged into the same wall power receptacle?  If different they could be on different circuits.

What frequency is the buzzing at?  Had a DIY chip amp (with power supply in a separate cabinet) here for trial and it picked up a nearby radio station.

Thanks all for the replies.   Let me try to answer each of you.

First, to FullRangeMan.  Thanks for explaining what you meant by inverting the outlet pins.  I should have realized that outlip was a typo.

All my power cable cables are three prong.  I'm in Massachusetts, so I'm on US current.  On the system that's picking up the radio station I had a four outlet wall box installed.  I believe it's going into one circuit.  I have a lot of equipment, so I have four powerstrips, each with surge protection, going into this four outlet box.  I don't know the frequency the buzzing or radio station is coming in at.  There is no cable box connected to either of my two systems.  These are both strictly stereo music only systems.   I guess my next step will be to start disconnecting pieces of equipment, one by one, and also try separating cables, one by one.  Also, I should insure that any pieces that require grounding are all being grounded to the same ground post.

Thanks again,
George M
