Hi: I would like to replace the red LED that is burnt out on my Nakamichi RX-202 cassette deck. This is to light up the cassette well area. I have tried a few led's from Rat Shack, but they barely give off enough light, especially for the cassette area! Maybe I should be looking for something else?! Thanks, Keith

Do you know the voltage applied to the LED, or have a multimeter to measure it?

There are a lot of LEDs out there.  Digikey lists more than 8000, more than 760 of which are red.  Through-hole mount gets us down to 260+, but next we need a voltage.  The brightness range is 1mcd to 10,000mcd, so we can certainly find something bright enough.  :)

Do you have a link or part number for the Radioshack ones you tried that weren't bright enough?  That would give a starting point.  That info plus the voltage should narrow it down to a specific recommendation.

Sorry! I don't have a part number or anything for the LED's....they were in a clear bag,all assorted!Got the whole bag for 5 bucks. Do I measure at the led, or at the circuit board, where the connector for the lamp plugs in? All I have is a cheap analogue volt meter....Will it be d.c. or a.c.? Thanks,Huck

Hey!

Set your meter to DC and with a range of about 10V... depending on your meter the range could be different on your meter. But most likely that the V on this won't be more than 5V. You could take measure at the solder connections or at LED's legs. If the meter move backward or won't move just reverse it.

After you know the V than you could select the right LED with the right V for it. BTW... I bought an ultra bright Blue LED from Radio Shack to replace the green one that came with my DAC kit and it is bright! It will lite up the darken room with a cool blue glow.  I forgot the mcd on this one.

I'm pretty sure that one of those LED at Radio Shack should be OK in your Nak. An another place that I know of is...

http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?webpage_id=3&CATID=41&ObjectGroup_ID=292

But I still think one of the Radio Shack would do.... so you won't have to pay for shipping for just one LED. Just pick on with a bit more V rated than what on the Nak. Good luck. :D

Oh! BTW... this is the Nak deck that flip the tape out for auto reverse right?

Take care,

Thanks! I will check out the deck tomorrow for voltage! Yep! That is the deck that"flips" the cassette around for auto reverse! Cool! BTW..if I measure at the LED legs...won't I get 0 volts, being the LED is "gone".."dead" Thanks, Huck

Hey!

Those legs still connected so you will could still get V reading from them. But if you don't get any V reading than there is more problem.

Oh! And of course you could change LED to other color if you like.

Thanks! I have been to these sites...loads of info, but not what I'm looking for! I gave ESL an e-mail, maybe they have a similar piece or a source to buy it. Thanks, Huck

Thanks! I measured again and I got 30 volts d.c. again! I sent an e-mail to ESL and apparantely this LED is not the original! Turns out the o.p. was a 12 volt lamp!! Thanks for all those that tried to help!! Huck

Hey!

I see...  someone put a LED in there instead of a lamp. :? No wonder is burned out since most LED work with lower V than that.

So, is should be a 12V lamp right? Looking at the rubber holder and lead spacing it seem like maybe this could be the one....

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=070-280

Maybe? But if the original lamp was 12V than why you got 30V reading? Did you take measure from the legs of the LED? Is there a resistor in the back of that board?

Take care,

Thanks! I took the measurement at the solder joints,Not sure about the resistor, maybe one underneath!? Thanks,Huck
