Are there any stereo integrated with a sub pre-out?
« on: 28 Mar 2005, 03:28 am »
Was just thinking about adding a stereo integrated to my HT setup but I have bookshelf as main with a powered sub so if I want to use an stereo integrated it would need a sub pre-out.  Does that exist because I would assume most only have the regular speaker output.

The other day I auditioned a Creek A50i and was very impressed but did not think about my setup with the sub so I didn't check if it had a sub pre-out.  I also checked out some Jolida hybrid and there I asked and it's possible to order a optional sub pre-out, nice!

Thanks.

NAD has a cool unit called the L53, I don't know if it's what you had in mind, but it's $600 and it is a stereo receiver with a built-in progressive scan DVD player.  What's cool about it is that it also has a sub out, digital inputs, composite/s-video inputs, universal remote, timers and all kinds of cool stuff that you would usually only get on a surround receiver.  Lots of integrateds have pre-out/main-ins though if you have an external crossover.  If  you don't, NHT makes one called the X2.

Hum, sorry for my stupid question.  Somebody else told me I should use the speaker level output into my sub amp.  This makes sense, I don't know why I did not think about it... so this way I don't have to limit my selection for a stereo integrated.

Since I have your attention, hahaha, might as well ask your opinion.

My budget is something max $1500 but the lower the better!  It must outclass the performance of my current Arcam receiver.  It's an old 5.1 analog only (dolby pro logic) receiver and I have listened to all the new receivers in the <$1500 range, nothing beats it for a nice, warm and musical CD sound (I've tried NAD, Integra, Pioneer, Marantz, Integra and even the newer Arcam).

My current contenders are Arcam A65, Jolida 1501RC, Creek CD50i, Music Hall Mambo and Naim Nait5i.  I have auditioned the first three and the Creek is the nicest but the most expensive.   The Jolida is interesting but very different sound, I have to listen to it once more.  The Arcam is, well, Arcam, I know and like this sound.

Any of you compared any of these?  Thanks for your feedback.

use pre out from an integrated, instead of  speaker out into a powered sub, if possible - likely the powered sub will sound much better this way, due to cheap x-over electronics inside it.

many integrated amps have extra outs for subs.  but, personally, i would look for an integrated amp that has preamp outputs *and* main inputs.  this offers ultimate flexibility.  you can run an outboard active x-over thru a loop like this, using the integrated's internal amp for, say subwoofers, & an outboard tube amp for your monitors.  or, use your powered subs thru the x-over, w/the powered subs' x-over point set at their highest setting, & the active x-over set at 40-60hz.  and use the integrated's internal amp, crossed over to drive your monitors.  most any monitor speaker will perform noticably better w/its need to see frequencies below 40-60hz (depending on the monitor) removed.

several integrated amps have a pre-out/main-in feature, including the creek 5350se, and thule ia100.  both of these can be had for <$1500, even less money when purchased used.
