Encore X-LS, 8 ohm x 200 watt?
« on: 16 Feb 2022, 03:23 am »
I am new to the group and I am working on building some Encore X-LS Speakers.  Danny has been a lot of help.  Did have a question though, I see the speakers are 8 ohm speakers.  I saw that the Tiny Dancer Speakers were 8 ohm x 200 watts.

Considering using a Emotiva BasX A2 Stereo Amplifier, it is 8 ohm x 160 watts.  Not sure if that is a good fit?  Currently I have a Marantz NR1403, 50 watt per channel, not sure how many when using 5 speakers.

Going to use the preamp rca outputs, and connect to the Emotiva.  Wanted to see what people thought of this or if there is better fit?

I understand that these speakers have some similarities with the Tiny Dancer Speakers I believe, that speaker stated it could handle 200 watts x 8 ohm.

Thank You.

Watts don't really mean anything.
It could be seen as a theoretical maximum, but it really depends on the amp being used.

A 10W amplifier that is clipping/distorting at full volume will destroy a speaker a lot faster than a 200w or 1000w amp using only a portion of it's power. Which to some would mean it's only rated for 9W, because it blows up at 10W, when with a more powerful amp, its perfectly happy with playing 40W+ at concert levels.

The X-LS are a very easy to drive speaker and will happily run on a 8W tube amp or 1000W class D so long as you dont start clipping the amps. With the latter, your ears will bleed long before the speaker burns up.

I have the same receiver and it’s fine for any of Danny’s kits.  I’ve driven a full 5.1 channel system of X-Statiks, X-Voce, and X-Omnis with that receiver with no problems.  The only downside is it’s older and not 4K compatible.

The vast majority of speakers need 30-100 watts for a typical room.  Make the room bigger and you may want more power.  Make the room smaller and you may only need 10-50 watts.  Emotiva makes well regarded gear.  160 watts is plenty of power for most speakers.  But your receiver may have all the power you need.  I suggest building your speakers and listening with what you have before jumping on the upgrade train before you need to.
