    I find it hard to believe Geddy Lee's Net Worth estimate on the internet is only 40 million. The band Rush has been touring for 40 years plus numerous albums. Probably listened to at least a dozen times a day around the world by radio or streaming.

Yet someone like Lady Gaga who I couldn't even name one of her songs but may have listened to by accident. Her Net Worth 320 million.

Rush was always a band that was popular among smart people.  Unfortunately smart people are (by definition) not the majority.  So other artists with broader appeal are going to be more successful, even if the quality of their music is lesser.

You also have to look at the media itself: Rush started in the early 70s and their music was sold only in analog form. According to their Wiki page, their albums only charted in Canada and USA in the early days. Nowadays, anyone can find music globally and download all around the world. How many of us have weird, foreign music in out collection?

There was no global juggernaut to shove a song down your throat. That's one of the bad things of all the stations being owned by the same people.

Let's not forget how the music industry gives you pennies on the dollar for your album. Money is made on touring. Let's be honest: these Pop artist rely on too much of a dog and pony show while bands like Rush went out there and played quality songs.

   I saw and heard the drum solo to Working Man in IIRC '77 at our Old Barn (since been demolished). And then a year or two later for the second time. IMO he didn't play it as good as he did the first time.

Anyway the only other Rock drum solo that I would consider better is Moby Dick by Led Zeppelin Song Remains the Same.

What gives?

While some pop artists might be lame, Lady Gaga is actually really talented and I have heard that she is great to work for.  But of course she has made more money with her massive touring and other endeavors.
Rush, as a gentlemen explained above, has never sold as many records (even when they made a lot of money selling records).  They have always been a niche band.  They made plenty of money and seem to live (RIP Neil) relatively comfortable and happy lives.  I know several people who toured with them and they always told me that it was the best tour to work on because the band was gracious, generous and wanted to do everything right even if they made less money.  (I know of one story that they played a show in Costa Rica and brought the crew over a week early just to hang out......this probably cost them a ton of money to do but they just always wanted to take care of their crew.) I just think that greed and money never drove them.  They love the art form and they love making music and bringing it to their fans.  They never compromised on their integrity.  So yeah, net worth is lower but self esteem must be much higher.  And 40 million dollars is more than enough for anybody to live a happy life.

Good for Geddy and all the other musicians that have made some cash in their lives.  My hats off to them.

Some people have different priorities. Some people are better at creating wealth or marketing than others. Those really don't have much to do with musical talent. A million dollars a year for 4 decades, not bad at all.
