Single Ended RCA cable Length?
« on: 19 Oct 2021, 11:21 pm »
Will 8 foot long RCA cables be too long and should I go with Balanced cables? This will be for connecting two servo subs.
I am in the planning stage and need to sort out if I need RCA, Balanced, or both for amps.

Shouldn’t be a problem.

I'd like to extend this question to 15ft. I'd like to move my source gear to the side wall and leave the amps on the front wall. None of the amps have balanced inputs. As a reference Audioquest's longest length in RCA is 15ft. Is it safe to assume that is about the max? 15ft would get it done for me. AQ's 15 footers are not cheap. If anyone has DIY experience making comparable or better for less please share. Thanks!

I moved my source gear to the back wall which required 25' cables. I had issues with noise which were reduced significantly when I got well shielded RCA cables. I got Douglas Connections Bravo cables.

After getting new equipment that was fully balanced I switched to the Bravo XLR cables. If your equipment has balanced outputs, go with balanced cables. This provides common mode rejection which you don't get with single ended outputs and cables. To go fully balanced I had to replace my A370PEQ3 sub amps with A370XLR3 amps.

I would look at Blue Jeans cables RCA's.  They are well shielded from end to end and very low capacitance.  Should be fine for 15' or longer.   And it won't break the bank.

Mogami 2549 may also be a good choice.

I am using Mogami 2549 on my short run. So I'll go with that.

Thanks everyone who posted.

If you want really the best sound quality for a reasonable amount of money you should make DIY Helix Image interconnects.

I know everyone has their favorite interconnect so why not throw mine in too.  I actually second the Blue Jeans LC-1 as it’s well made and very reasonably priced.  That said my current favorite would be the Iconoclast BAV interconnects.  Also produced by the Blue Jeans guys so you know they’re tested and well made.  As good as the LC-1’s are they were left in the dust by the BAV cables.  The latter are more transparent and allow for better dynamics.  They even beat my Kimber interconnects in dynamics.  The difference was immediately noticeable.

If you are using single-ended cables (RCA), you should try to make sure both the source (preamp) and subwoofer amps are plugged into the same AC circuit to minimize ground loops. I am using a 7M called to one of my subs without any hum issues. DH Labs Subsonic II. But I'm using balanced connections to my monoblocks to drive my NX-Oticas.

At shows we've used 25 foot long interconnects running to the subs in the rear of the room with no issues.
