Help with wood finish
« on: 16 Jan 2021, 02:52 am »
My last set of cabinets I was almost done with failed because I did not use veneer softener around my Round over radius.  My goal with them was a cherry cabinet with white baffles.  Now I’m doing gloss white cabinets/base with shiny oil based polyurethane baffles.  I want them to be darker/more shine.  IDK maybe a hint or red brown but, just a pop darker.  The picture below is one rub of arm-r-seal.  Can I order gloss and have it tinted or what do y’all recommend?

You can try adding some red mahogany dye like TransTint to the Arm-R-Seal. Use gloss Arm-R-Seal. If it gets shinier that you want, you can use semi-gloss or satin for the last coat.

Make up a little bit and practice on scrap pieces of the veneer to get the tone you like first.

I believe I still have a full bottle of Mahogany Red dye that Mike just mentioned I didn't use aside from a few test samples when i was looking for a red I liked. (Eventually went with a 50/50 hybrid of Perfect & Bright red)

I never did any samples with Mahogony tinted lacquer, but it would be a bit more vibrant than this sample pic I took.

Proceed with caution and test first. Oil based polyurethane is specifically listed as an incompatible finish and TransTint goes in almost anything. See page 5

You could make up a tint coating  with Shellac and use as interim coating, then finish with the poly. Alternately you could lightly tint the poly with UTCs. Easy does it with UTC as it's pigment and can turn the finish translucent. Think really thin paint.

If you want to enhance the open grain some, you could apply a  tinted wash coat over your poly base.

If you don't want surprises sample on something other than your baffles, but I don't have to tell you that, right?
