Getting started with DIY audio ...
« on: 10 Mar 2021, 07:38 pm »
I have been following this channel off and on and doing a lot of reading and research on DIY audio, so I figured now is a good time to introduce myself.  I have some woodworking background so the idea of making speaker/subwoofer enclosures sounds great to me!  I have ordered one of the single subwoofer kits and I have the cabinet mostly built and am waiting for the amp.  I don't have a sub for my 2-channel system so this looks like a good starting point.  I am in the north-central NJ area which has almost finished thawing out from the snowy winter.

Thanks!  I grew up in central CT so I still consider myself a New Englander.  I got the servo sub kit 2.  Assuming that goes well, I think I will step up to an NX Studio next to pair with the sub.  My room is relatively small (13x13) so I can't go with a big tower.  I have Magnepan MMGs and Zu Dirty Weekends for now, and I will be looking to sell the latter soon I think.

Welcome.
I am also new to the group and soon will starting my first speaker and subwoofer builds. Even though I have full (but cramped) wood shop I opted to go with the flatpacks from Jay for the speakers and the soon to be available flatpack for the Servo Sub 2 from GR Research. I will interested to see how your subwoofer project develops.

Welcome to the AC, Bryan,

I've been an avid speaker designer/builder for many years.  If you're up for building one of the finest speakers on the planet; I'll share my drawings with you.

Here's a link to my DIY speaker website:  http://jazzman-esl-page.blogspot.com/

And here's a video of my latest design; the Jazzman MkIII ESL:

Welcome Bryan,
I am relatively new here as well, been browsing for years before joining audio circle.
I am an open baffle fan myself, I currently have spatial audio m3 triode master’s with my tube amps!
My next build will be either Nx studio monitors or the nx-otica mtm version! With h frame open baffle subs!

Jazzman, your work never ceases to amaze me!  Bryan, Jazzmans speakers sound excellent, I’ve heard the previous iteration. If these outperform what I heard 2 years ago, they would be hard to beat!

I agree, his speakers look amazing.  Another topic I am looking into are all the options for Maggie mods since I have MMGs.  Are the Spatials as good as people say?

I like them a lot, better than the Maggie 3as I used to have.  I am third owner of these still evaluating them!  The price was right do I could not resist!  They are not as good as the new sapphires, but at 1/3 the price I can’t complain!

I will keep them until I move into a bigger room!  I was looking at a flatpack and one of Danny’s kits. Until these fell into my lap.  Still planning on one of Danny’s kits in the future!

Barry--   I just realized you're Barry from Carverfest!   BTW, we missed you this past Carverfest; which was rather sparsely attended because of the pandemic, no doubt.

Yes, the speakers you heard were the prototypes I built for Martin Fring 3 years ago.  The new versions are a bit slimmer in depth, designed PCB's replaced the point-to-point wired proto boards, biasing voltage was increased from 2.7kV to 3.3kV for higher efficiency, and Peerless SLS woofers replaced the Eminence Kapa-Lites.  The Peerless woofers sound better at half the price and can play lower before rolling off-- I only used the Kapa-lite pro woofers in Martin's speakers because they are rated for 900 watts, and we know Martin's reputation for smoking woofers :-)

Greg Garza posted a fabulous review of the prototypes in the auction thread.  He and Martin hooked them up to a monster Sunfire amp and drove them to insane volume with no ill effects or hint of distortion.  I was cringing in the corner with my hands over my ears-- it was amazing abuse.   The new ones are even better, more refined, and the aesthetics are magnificent.

Good to hear from you, Barry

Hey Charlie,
The past year was insane, lost two good friends to COVID, most recent was in the past week!  Mom in her nursing home actually beat COVID at 88 years old, was a tough fight for her.  This year should be able to make it to Carverfest at least a day or two.   My children in East Tennessee have been begging me for a visit!  I’ve been out of work since last year, so traveling is at a minimum.  Been tweaking my system and staying home listening to music.  Greg Garska does  an honest review, out of my price range though.  You do very nice woodwork!  Whoever wins that auction will be very happy!

Til we meet again, as always enjoy the music!
