New old member again into Bryston
« on: 16 Dec 2020, 06:13 pm »
Hi everyone,

I am returning member after several years. I used to own BDA-1 and BP26 of Bryston electronics into other brand amp. This was my best ever audio system after switching many many gear through more than 20 years. As audio reviewer I had a chance to try many gear, but Bryston was the one I ended with.

To tell the truth, I more or less impulsively sold it as after few months from new sound started to be flat, like mediocre FM signal. Need to say that breaking and sound change of my ex Bryston gear was very evident, but I was happy with the sound from the start. It replaced my pretty expensive Naim system and I cannot express how how high I rate Bryston sound quality. Said thing is that after 2-3 months when I expected for the sound to stop with more or less subtle changes, instead of that everything collapsed. I am sure it is Bryston as I hear that through BP26 and headphones, so other brand amp or speakers are not the issue. Probably I wasn't patient enough, so I decided to sell and give up for some time.

That was in a time when I couldn't find gear that completely suit my taste and Bryston did deliver phenomenal SQ and I said to myself this is it, but eventually all started to sound shrinked and weak.

If it was today, I would not give up and will try to find the cause.

I am writing all this to you respectful members and Mr. Tanner as I plan to go the Bryston route again and I plan to buy BDA-2 and BP26. As you can see, I have experience with new Bryston gear which really change through breaking in, but always sound fine through the process.

May I kindly ask you if it's normal what I heard as flat, weak and FM like sound during the time when (I believe) my Bryston gear was in the breaking phase, or is that something else maybe known as an issue with some units?

I am very serious about going Bryston again and would really appreciate any honest comments.

Thank you very much,
Ozi

I dont think the problem was your Bryston gear, they are great! Leaves power amp, speakers and the room.
I can recommend the new Cubed series, super amps!
As for speakers it is more difficult to say.
The room is very important, not many room has good acoustics without treatment.
I think the speaker room combination is the most important but at the same time the most difficult aspect.
Go for Bryston electronics and leave it to that and play around with speakers and the room until you find what you are looking for.
Try different locations for the speakers and try to have much furniture, heavy drapes and curtains, art on the walls, carpets and such.
Empty rooms with hard walls will newer sound good.

Hi Raimo,

no prob. Thanks for your advices, but yes, it just suddenly changed. Overnight I believe and it was audible through the phones too. I did't move or disconnect anything in the meantime. It just happened. All that depth, smoothness and scale has suddenly gone. It was like you are listen to small portale radio.

I experienced slow and Shut in sound during breaking in other gear, but not sure if that was the reason here.
