220 Volts to 110 Volts
« on: 23 Feb 2005, 04:17 am »
Since I have read that Volt Converters can hurt the sound quality of some components, does anyone know if an electrician could permanatly change a Shanling CD-S100 (Music Hall 25) form 220 Volts to 110 volts?  Thus eliminating the need for the outboard converter?  And anyone know if this would be an expensive or easy (cheap) change?

It depends on the power supply in the player. The transformer is the part of the power supply that steps down the voltage and if it has taps for a 110/120 volt input the change would be pretty easy. If it doesn't have the correct taps then it would need to be replaced with a 110/120 volt transformer. Some other modifications might also be required, depending on the exact design of the power suppy.

Are you comfortable enough to open up the player and have a look at the transformer?  If you could take a detailed picture or two, we might be able to guide you through the process or determine whether it can be done.   My guess is the tranny has both 220 and 110 primaries but I won't know until I see inside.

I ended up buying a Usher CD-100 which is the same as the Shanling except a US version.  So no need for the conversion.  Thanks though

i have a similar situation...

i bought a used monarchy 24/96 dip boxes, but it is the 240v version...

i wrote the company, and they said that converting this unit to us standard is easy, provided you know how to solder. they said the following, sent this schematic...

the trick is, i have never soldered before. what will i have to do to get this done..?
