My Introduction
« on: 15 Oct 2020, 01:01 pm »
Greetings.  I’ve been a member of this circle for a while and now it’s time for me to put my interest in to action!  I am an avid woodworker, enjoy listening to quality music systems and surround entertainment. The past few years I have learned and now teach CNC for woodworkers and making audio speakers is a match.  However, making the crossover is intimidating but I’m confident I can learn this new set of skills.

If any of you live in the Houston area come see me at the Woodcraft Houston North.

Hi Mark,

I'm in Tulsa not Huston. I get most of my supplies from Woodcraft here in Tulsa. The crossovers are intimidating at first. They are what I was most worried about in the beginning. However, they are no difficult. There is plenty of help here and Danny has recently posted step by step YouTube videos of building a crossover.

Welcome to AC.
Thanks Danny. I’ve been eyeing your av series and would like to start on the A/V-3S and learn the roads. Following that, the AV/3 and AV-1RS. Please let me know if you have another suggestion.

Hey Mike. I’ve seen pictures of the Tulsa woodcraft. Kinda messy. Of course these were the photos taken after it was hit by the tornado!  Sure glad no one was hurt.

I watched those crossover videos and that pushed me closer to the confidence level.

I'm in Houston and just started another thread documenting my NXtreme speaker build.

I wish I would have seen your post earlier because I had some shipping damage, and your woodworking skills locally might have helped make them salvageable.

In any case, you mentioned liking to hear great audio systems.  If you haven't already...I would recommend checking out 3mA Audio on West Alabama near Montrose.  Not only do they have great gear inhouse, they have social events where you can meet other customers with great listening rooms and gear.  For example, I recently visited a guy with YG Sonia 2.3 which were killer.

Last week, I was there listening to the MBL Extremes, and we had a little fun playing nothing but rap music on them for the night.  It may not be your taste, but here's the video to give you a flavor.  My Nxtreme build is also on this channel, and it will be fun to eventually compare to these mega dollar speakers.

I've heard all those mega dollar speakers, the NX-treme is (IMO) better.  As long as the front end gear (and the room) is equal in both systems, the NX-Tremes should come out on top.

The MBL Extreme will come the closest since it's an omni speaker, but it has box speakers for bass, so the NX-Treme will definitely pull ahead when it comes to bass clarity and detail.

Have you listened to many omni or OB speakers before?  Because they present music in a quite different way than box speakers.  OB speakers tend to create a large soundstage that is deeper (further away) from you than box speakers.  Box speakers tend to push sound toward you.
