Are There any Up and Coming Audio Researchers?
« on: 1 Nov 2020, 03:46 am »
There is a foundation of very good work done by various individuals that form the current "status quo" of wisdom.  Some names are mentioned with a reverence as if their work put an end to investigation.  Conventional wisdom in the audio world needs to be questioned from time to time to increase knowledge and understanding.  Is there anybody doing research, maybe contrarian to conventional wisdom, that might become the modern day name mentioned with great reverence?

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

By the little I know not in audio field, the audio technology is old and proven, it is already known what is good and bad, the last news I remember was Class D, before that the dispute Bob Carver x Stereophile. Maybe in military technology or physics.

Go to AES (Audio Engineering Society) to find the current researchers.

Are you implying Floyd Toole might not be the be all, end all, forever expert on loudspeakers?

Not an up and comer but an already up is Bruno Putzeys, Class D guru.

Dr. Toole's lifetime of work is impressive. No argument.  However, don't think anybody deserves the crown as all knowing expert forever.  Maybe in the realm of loudspeakers his, and others, work is good enough.  Although, an interesting quote is attributed to him "Two ears and a brain respond very differently to a complex sound field — and are much more analytical — than an omni-directional mic and analyzer."  That seems to fly in the face of the belief that measurements tell us everything and our ears and brains can't be trusted. Also sounds like he might think there is more work to be done.

Economics are likely a major concern across all things audio.  There has to be a market for the next best thing.  Wonder if even possible for another like Dr. Toole in the current environment.

Even the best speakers are still not anywhere near where they could be. We still have much to learn. Floyd’s work is a tremendous start, but it has holes.
