Room most important?

I'll agree it's important, probably the most important of the aspects of our sound we can control, but being mainly a rock listener, I feel it's the music.  I don't hear many rock recordings that jump out and tell me, "Yeah, you've got it right!", but when I do, it's nice.  Short of changing my preference in music, I don't feel I have many options.

Kind of a bummer, but there are enough out there that sound fantastic to make my day.  The rest still sound good, but I wish they'd pay more attention to recording quality.

cheers,

Dick

What you describe is exactly the type of thing I regret most about getting into this hobby.  Too much knowledge can be a bad thing.  Although I've always made a mental note of the sound of various recordings, I was never as hyper-aware of that aspect as I am now.  I always knew there was clipping all over Bathory releases, but dammit I loved the music.  Now when I listen to them I become fixated on the scratchy clipping and not the music.  Perhaps it's not so much the higher quality equipment revealing flaws as it is the mind's own awareness OF the equipment and of minutia like noises and whatnot.  The mental focusing on sound and not music.  It's a sickness.  An expensive sickness!  To me the most important component is the brain!  I wish I could regress my musical mind back to 1989 and leave it there indefinitely!

Nathan: One should accept that as one ages, one does gain experience and wisdom. This is not a bad thing Nathan, maturity is something that grows on most of us. Of course the receding hairline and ever widening gut tend to expand with time also.

No no no, I'm not talking about aging I'm talking about focusing on sound instead of music as a result of gaining knowledge of the mechanics of sound reproduction.  A shift in perception.  That's what I wish I could go back to, enjoying music without worrying about all the other crap.  I feel there is more enjoyment to be gained from mysterious things than there are from ones you have an intimate knowledge with, at least as far as music is concerned IMO.  It's a double edged sword.

I agree Nathan, and I know what Dan's describing although my hairline's ok, thanks Dad, and my waistline is under control somewhat!  Pop goes the top of another cider...

I like to hear the details I'm hearing now, don't get me wrong, some songs I'm rediscovering  are revelations.  I'm just kind of bummed that it seems I'll have to learn to like different music to hear the things others talk about when describing their system.  I'd like to try to find a common footing I guess.  Ah hell, I'm rambling again...looks like I'm going to be busy shortly so I should go crank it up while I still can...on the highway to hellll...

cheers,

Dick

One recording that I use for an Involveing experience is Stevie Ray Vaughns Little Wing. When I listen to that I have to just forget about all the anal listening for different stuff and just think about the tune.

Stan Ridgway I listen to alot and that is very involving to me also.

Great recordings do it for me.I also try to do paperwork and when I hear something that is really great I have to just stop till the tune is over.
 :o
That's how I get away from being a critical listener.  8)

I recently got a copy of SRV- Live at Carnaghie (sp?) Hall.

The first 3 or four songs just cook.  Hard to listen anally, hard to not play air guitar to it too :-)

One more note...

I was once concerned about the details and if I could ever listen to music without being too critical.  I found the culprit and it's no other than my listening chair.  When I have music playing and I'm not in my listening chair I find that I'm not as critical as I am when I'm purched in the sweet spot.

GIve it a shot.  If they only place you can listen to music is in your chair in the sweet spot then may I recommend getting a secondary system in a place that won't set you up to criticize the music that you are listening too.

Good Luck
