Norh, what is the deal?
« on: 9 Mar 2005, 03:50 pm »
Hello all.  I am a new member here, but I've lurked from time to time (not consistently though).  I am curious about Norh speakers.  I have been very active on a few forums (over 2000 posts on HTF before I quit posting there and over 6000 posts on HTT) so a few years ago when Norh hit it big, there were posts about them EVERYWHERE.  Now I never see posts on most of the 5-6 audio/HT forums I hang out at.  So what is the deal?  Why are they not the forum darling they once were?  I know many people dont like the design (I love both the horn design and the prism designs) but they received good reviews at the time they were popular.  And I almost never see them for sale used, so people must really hold on to them.

OK, now with the specific questions.  I am trying to segregate my 2ch system from my HT system.  Originally I was going to use my main L/R speaker (Mirage Omni 260s) with my HT sub (DIY low Q 15" sealed sub right now, moving to IB this summer).  Now I am thinking about moving to using totally seperate speakers except for using the sub in both systems.

I am very curious about the 5.2 Prisms.  Like I said, I like the horn designs too, but I'm not a big fan of speaker stands.  As well, I have a 9 month old, so speaker stands are probably becoming a wors option, not a better one.  My Mirage Omni's retail for $1000 and I paid about $850 for them, which is pretty common.  Can the 5.2s with a sub compete with these Mirages with a sub as well?  I'm assuming they will sound different, but will they be on par?  I am looking for a slightly more laid back sound, although the Mirages are not bright IMO.  What kind of tweeter is used in the 5.2?  Another question I have is the tweeter on the 5.2 is on a slanted baffle to aim it up since they are not very tall.  However, this suggests that there is an optimal distance away to be seated.  Is that correct or is there some play there?  How much?

Thanks in advance for any info.  I think this may be one of the few places on the internet with a dedicate Norh section.
