New to Headphones
« on: 8 Aug 2020, 02:37 pm »
Spending more time at home lately.  Need a set of over-ear headphones for use with primarily apple devices.

I tried the Hifiman HE400i 2020 version.
I found them comfortable and enjoyed them.  Unfortunately, their open back design was not appreciated by my other family members.

I would love some suggestions.

Preferences:
Budget around $200
Over-ear for comfort
No separate amp required

I have lightning to 3.5mm adapters

Thank you.

Welcome! Go to Amazon and check out Status Audio CB-1 phones... Not expensive, good efficiency,
good sound!

  • To whom more was given more will be required.

Please note this HE400i

Also, because of their very open enclosure, their soundstage will be perceived to be more open than that of closed-back headphones.

Headphone Mania Circle is closed.
Moved back to Starting Block.
Carry on...

The OP stated he was going to use them with Apple devices via the lightning to 1/4" adapter which will probably struggle to deliver satisfying dynamics with either high impedance cans or planars. Open back cans have already gotten the 'thumbs down' from the family so if it comes down to a choice between soundstage and your family, I assume you'll choose family. So, closed cans it is, unless you want to go down the IEM route. That might be a solution if high isolation in both directions is needed, in which case i'd say investigate Etymotics.

Thank you for your reply.  I have a pair of the Status CB-1s coming tomorrow :)

The Mezze-99 look nice if the CB-1s don’t work.

Thanks again for your input. Appreciate it.

Report back after they've got some hours on them. If the Meze 99 comes into the picture, look at Massdrop (now 'Drop'); they have them often at bulk pricing.Think of them as the Costco of high end audio.
