Quick Introduction
« on: 23 Jul 2020, 04:37 am »
Good evening (or morning depending on where you are in the world).   :)   Just a short note to say hello.   I'm in the process of building a dedicated theater room, and a good friend and colleague turned me onto GR Research.   The videos led me here.   I've been watching a lot of videos lately, enough to finally pull the trigger on my first audio DIY project.  I'm no stranger to DIY or even building stuff with wood, but my main weakness when it comes to A/V is definitely the A.   I am working to change that, and what better way to deep dive than to build my own speakers.   I'll be building a pair of the XL-S speakers with the upgrades and using a flatpack kit from Peter.

If this goes well, then I'm considering going the full 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos (although I haven't seen ceiling speaker kits yet) using Danny's kits to replace my aging Klipsch setup.  Wish me luck!

Thank you!   Funny you should reply.  Your ears must have been burning.   I just got done with all 30 pages of your flat pack thread.  I'll be contacting you in the near future for kits for a pair of duals (planning stereo subs).   If these X-LS speakers perform as well as I think they will, then I'll pull the trigger on another pair, add the X-Statiks, a Voce, and a pair of Servo Sub kits.   It's already sitting in my cart.   It may be a few months, though.   Flat packs for the XL-S are already shipped, but I looked at Danny's tracking for the tube connectors, and those won't be in his hands before August.   No worries.   I have a bunch of other stuff to do first to get the room itself ready.

I can't tell you how many days I've spent researching speaker options for this Home Theater project.   Watching Danny's "Why DIY" video was the real eye opener.   I'll start small, and then go big or go home.    :thumb:

Wow.    Only one week later, and both the XL-S hardware kits (well, minus the tube connectors, of course, but no rush) and the flat packs are already at my door!   Amazing service from Danny and Peter!

This is going to be a fun.   :)

Thanks!   I have never messed with tube connectors before.   I ordered a plethora of wall plates and banana plugs for the theater room that may now end up in the parts bin.   It's a good thing I ran long enough wires to come straight from the wall to the receiver, speakers and amp.

I had Peter send me the flat packs with the cutouts for the binding posts and paid extra for Danny to send both tube connectors and binding posts.   I'll have both options in these two speakers just for experimentation.   For the final theater setup, these will become the rear channel and will sit away from the walls (still trying to decide how best to do that considering it's an odd shape at the rear of the room).   For the side channels, I'll order flat packs for just the tube connectors, but I am actually contemplating on recessing them into the side walls and painting them the same color as the walls (a dark satin or flat blue).   Then I may just drill a hole in the side towards the rear of the speaker boxes to run the speaker wires directly to the crossovers.

I am considering Bowers & Wilkins for the ceiling Atmos (since Danny doesn't appear to have kits for those), but I am open to suggestions.   I already have back boxes (B&W BB6C) in place with an 8" pre-mount installed:
