Power on? Power off?
« on: 14 Sep 2020, 04:03 am »
To leave the amp powered on always?  When I had a 14B SST, I asked, and the answer was something like: "Our official position is there is no improvement by leaving it powered on. It's most noticeable after about 36 hours."

Now I have a 4B3. It runs cool. Any reason not to leave it on?

Was this posted by a Bryston rep. Those two statements sound exclusive. No benefit to the sound, but only after the 36 hours it takes to warm up? If so, that would require you to keep them running 24/7 if you used them on a daily basis. No way you could turn them on/off each day based on the 36 hour statement.

I keep my Amphion Class D and active monitors AB internal amps on 24/7. I also go based on temperature test. No stacking and well ventilated for cool operation. I think I remember reading that the caps that are now used last longer as well, so should be good to leave them on 24/7?

Not a power amp, but I leave my BP-25 on constantly. There is a warm(er) spot when felt by hand but it's still pretty cool to touch. Ive always heard that failures are most likely to occur on powering up, so makes sense to leavon constantly on imo

If a solid state component takes more than 36 minutes to warm-up, there is a problem somewhere.

This is one of those asked and answered many many times. My experience with my Bryston (and most audio equipment) After being off for awhile (a day or more) it sound a bit off when turned on and gets better after about an hour or so. However it does sound even better after being on 24 hours.. I do not have the exact time it takes to get to the best, but can say after a day it sounds a little better.
Some gear I do not leave on 24/7,mainly due to tubes,
The other point is I listen all day every day, not once a week which is another matter about leaving on 24/7
If all you listen is on the weekend, why leave it on all week? where if you do listen every day, leaving it on is a better bet. than turning on and off several times a day

Thanks, Elizabeth. That makes sense. I do listen every day.

And thanks also to all who answered.

I turn on my 28’s Thursday night in anticipation of listening sessions Friday night. Also the preamp.
The tubed phono is turned on Friday about 3 and turned off at the end of each session.

The solid state stuff stays on until listening is finished late Saturday night.

There is a smoothness I don’t quite get when I turn off between sessions.
