Planting to improve audio
« on: 16 Apr 2003, 03:50 pm »
The wife recently purchased a silk palm tree and installed it in my listening room.  Wow what a difference this made in my room.  I now need to extra clixks of the volume knob to reach normal listening levels.  It has also really softened up the room.

I guess I just got lucky.

I installed a floor light which shines up on the palm tree for listening room ambiance.

If you room is a little to harsh you will be amazed at what one plant will do.

Palm trees, eh?  Perhaps a Tiki head bass trap is next?

I use my cats as sound dampening.  I have trained them to sit in particular spots for better imaging depending on the CD... everytime I put in a new CD in, they move to the correct spot for that CD.

Seriously, I would imagine plants do help difraction.

Plants in the Listening Room

I would expect marijuana plants to give the best ambience,  as your "soundstage" will just expand with every exhale, and for those of you with cats, keep the catnip out of the listening room. For those of who have a bar in the listening room, glass makes for poor absorption of sound, but great for absorption of booze. Marbles should be able to fill you in on that. Pimp Daddy, where are you?

I'm here with my bar (in my listening room)     No glass in it other than the drinking kind.

It's been a while since I expanded my "soundstage" but I will take your word for it.  I don't remember my college daze to well, but I seem to remember (vaguely) that phonemenon.

I thought ficus trees as room treatment were common wisdom??? I've seen that tweak several times.

Reefer is not a good plant for the listening room.  When you harvest it changes the configuration of the plant.  Thuis throwing off your sound.

Of course now with the palm tree I can only have tropical drinks while listening.  Jimmy Buffet seems to sound good with the palm tree tweak.  Rush (as in Geddy Lee) does not sound so good as there are no palm trees in Canada.

Now for a serious comment.  Try some plants.  It really softens up the room.

If you go the sand on the floors route, forget the cats.
