Saying hello from Brisbane', Australia
« on: 4 Jun 2020, 03:53 am »
So I was lead here looking for information on Wild Burro Betsy in an open baffle.  I have a set of Betsy's picked up second hand and am researching helper woofers and modelling in Basta (trying to figure out how to fool basta into knowing it is a full range driver???).

I'm not new to hifi and had many iterations of a main system and unfortunately multiple other systems in the house.

Current main system is stacked ESL57's with TBI Megallan subs and Towshend super tweeters.  QuadII per ESL57 - yes 4 of them and a Crown amp for the subs.  Pre is Audio Research LS2.  CD is an Opera Consenance Droplet 5.  I have built a Vacuum Tube Audio PH16 phonostage and a DIY SUT using Cinemag 1254's.  My main turn table is a mid 80's LP12 but up graded with kore, Ekos mk1 with Linn Akiva, Tangerine Audio Karman top plate, cirkus bearing, Mober inner and outer platter, Lingo 2, and tiger paw tranquillity.

Also have a hotrodded RP1 (because it is the Union Jack Plinth) and a stock mid 80's LP12.  On other systems there is a CJ Walker and a Strathclyde Transcription Development 305m with SME3009 arm. I have a Earle Western Troubador integrated valve amp on one system and Plinius MA102 monoblocks on another.

Projects on the go are ER Audio ESL IV's - long running due to summer heat in the garage in Brisbane being a big limitation, rebuild another LP12 (DIY corner brace, hercules mose power supply, tranquillity, Roksan Nima tonearm).  Also have an Orpheus Silex to put into a plinth and fit a JH Reproductions Formula 4 arm to it with ADC Super XLM cartridge.  Have the parts to build a Stereo Coffee LDR passive preamp also.

So just what I need is a set of Wild Burro Betsy's to present themselves.  I am researching the best way to implement them on a budget 1000AUD budget.  Issue is other than Faital pro drivers there isn't much available in Australia and freight cost is a killer on large woofers from overseas. Currently seems the 18" Goldwood GW-1858 one per side or the likes may be the way to go, but, whether to go passive or active on crossovers is still needing thought.  As i plan for these principally to be powered speakers it would be good if there was a 1x2 DSP to go one per side - but I don't like the idea of taking analogue into the digital domain and then back again - yes you can call me a silly old fart and you are right I don't have facebook, twitter etc!

Anyway, good to be here and have a look around.
