hello and help
« on: 27 May 2020, 03:30 am »
Hello everyone - first post
I am an amateur at nearly everything I most enjoy doing-music as a player and a listener is a big part of my life.
I have been playing keyboards, primarily virtual pianos and virtual Hammond organ through a pair of Behringer powered PA speakers. I used them for playing small venues in the past, but now they are  more or less permanently in my basement practice space. Recently one of those PA speakers has developed a bad hum and I am using that as a good excuse to build amplification for my keyboards and vocal mixer that would work better in my smallish practice space.
My thoughts returned to many years when I built simple open baffles for a pair of vintage Western Electric 755A drivers (I worked for the phone company and these speakers were abandoned in place in central offices. When they refitted Central Office for new equipment the  speakers and their enclosures were tossed out and I rescued them from the dumpster). They sounded very good indeed in the place that I still use as a practice space.
Sooo I bought a 3 channel class “D” 3 channel 1200W  stereo+sub amp (250W/250 + 700sub channel with adjustable crossover) and speakers (2 Eminence Beta-12CX 12" Coaxial Driver, 2 PRV Audio D280Ti-S 1" Titanium Horn Driver, LaVoce SAF184.01 18" Subwoofer, 2K LPF and HPF). I was intending to put the  12’s in OB and the sub in an H cab. My concern is the QTS may be low for open baffle… or maybe not. The  Eminence 12’s QTS is .48 and the LaVoce QTS is .3  I bought these for their power handling, but didn’t realize that OB driver’s recommended QTS is .7 and above.
I read through the Linkwitz site and although the science is way beyond my pay grade, I did notice that the drivers he recommends for his designs are often below the recommended 7.0 QTS. Given the relatively low QTS of the drivers I have what results could I expect if I were to build an OB system with the components I have on hand. Would you recommend I return the drivers and start fresh  with more appropriate components… perhaps the Eminence Alpha 15A and a separate tweeter…and who knows what Sub?
FWIW, I am using a small  Mackie mixer for input and have a Behringer Ultragraph Pro 31 band 3 Channel EQ with12dB gain and cut and the speakers I bought are unopened and still in their boxes.

Hi Chris,
Welcome to AudioCircle!!!

Yes, you can use your low Q drivers in OB, but you have to add electronic bass boost using your equalizers. The EQ built into the bass amp would be best, if it has enough gain. 12dB may not be enough. Might be enough for the Q.48 driver. Make sure the driver can take the boost, and measure to get flat response.

Low Q driver is capable of much better cone control and therefore better transient response and more detail, so it can sound better than a high Q driver that doesn't need EQ. But it's more complex and more expensive, so most DIY OB experimenters prefer the simplicity and lower cost of high Q bass driver.

edit: Linkwitz speakers use low Q, audiophile quality drivers with electronic equalization to flatten their response (transform their Q) so they can work correctly in open baffle.

Feel free to start a new topic in Open Baffle Circle for your project!

Thanks  for  the  welcome in general and  the advice in  particular. These are  going to be  used in my practice  space  for the for-seeable  future so I'll be  no where near the maximum in powering the drivers. The  open baffle  and coax driver was more to re-create  the  soundstage and ambience of the OB with the  option of taking it out as a proper  PA should  the need  arise.
much relieved to know that it will work with my choice in drivers... can't wait to get started!
