New HT Project Questions
« on: 28 Apr 2020, 09:13 pm »
About to embark on a fun project and I'm wondering if you guys might have some feedback on the following purchases to complete a 5.2.4 configuration:

2 - A/V-3 for front L and R
1 - A/V-3S for Center
2 - A/V-0 for rear L and R
2 - Servo Sub kit 2
4 - A/V-1RS for 4 ceiling speakers

The media room is 14'2" by 17'6". The seating and viewing will be along the shorter distance. The A/V-0s will be just behind and to the side of the couch and slightly in the corners of the room. The A/V-1RS will be installed on the ceiling and I think will just have to see how best to point them. Maybe the rear two point to the back wall and the front two point toward the couch? Perhaps the front two should point toward the front tv wall? Thoughts?

Also, how many sheets of No Rez would I need to buy for building those 11 speakers? My thought is possibly 8 sheets. Thoughts?

Looks like a good plan overall.

A/V-1RS models can be mounted on the ceiling and work well in that application, but you can't face them forward. To work properly they need to face a wall with the center of the tweeter 16" from the wall.

And I think you can line all of those using just six sheets of No Rez.

I honestly wouldn't bother with Atmos. I have added 4 ceiling Atmos speakers to my existing surround system and was not impressed at all.

My room size is similar to yours. My fronts are LS6 and X-Voce, mounted above the TV.

I was using ceiling-mounted compact Infinity satellites  for side and surround channels. I have re-purposed the ceiling speakers for Atmos,  re-positioning them according to Dolby guidelines. I have also added 2 ear-level X-LSes for Left and Right Surround. This resulted in very little noticeable difference from previous setup even after playing with some additional +db boost to Atmos layer speakers.

I have to admit that my particular setup could be the culprit. I'm already used to hearing surround effects from above, my front channel is too high. Front speakers are also quite tall and the very nature of line array vs point sources might be interfering with Atmos' 3d positional audio. Who knows exactly? Perhaps Danny could explain, but somehow, I get an impression that he hasn't dabbled much with this new marketing gimmick.

I'll let Danny correct me if I'm wrong but AV1/RS are designed to be bounced off the ceiling to produce more diffused, unlocalizable surround effect. This might be the complete opposite of precise object positioning that Atmos is trying to accomplish.

P.S. Some apologies:

1. Danny, if you feel like my post is costing you some business by deterring the sale of 4 extra AV1/RS, please delete this post altogether.

2. Admittedly, I have made a single post of what could or should have been split into several different ones, specifically:
    - advice to the Original Poster;
    - Danny's opinion on Dolby Atmos;
    - problems with Atmos with MY particular setup and possible fixes.

You have a good plan and you should plan on using height channels. Ceiling speakers are fine and you may also want to consider mounting height channels near the ceiling high on the wall. Atmos refers to this as front height and rear height configuration. This gives you the flexibility to use book shelf speakers. I use stands because active speakers are heavy, mounting brackets would work fine for passive bookshelfs. Here is an example:

It's basically the same configuration they use for mixing immersive content at Abbey Road studios:
