X-LS Upgrade with GR Neo 3
« on: 5 Apr 2020, 07:02 pm »
Danny,
Have you considered an option for the X-LS bookshelf speaker using your GR Neo 3 speaker?
What are the pros and cons?

I've often considered the same question, there was an older version that used the old cupped BG Neo-3s (instead of the closed or open Neo3s)
But the most similar design-wise are the NX-Studio monitors, which use a closed woofer & an open-baffle Neo-3 tweeter.
The biggest consideration would be making sure the Neo-3 can meet the woofer and designing a crossover for them, but at that point, you've also gotta design a different cabinet, or at least mod the X-LS cabinet in a way to prevent the Woofer from influencing the Neo-3 tweeter. But it might require a horn or wave-guide to allow the tweeter to play down low enough and time-aligned to the woofer.

If you're into tinkering, and have a 3D printer, it's definitely something that could be considered as a way to explore, test and measure how it affects everything. It would be a fun project to explore, esp if you're stuck at home.

Danny’s model that would basically be what you are talking about is the N1 or N1X. However, the deep back cup for the Neo3 is needed.

Parts Express does seem to have some available, tho you'll also need to purchase the flush mount brackets.

If you are planning on getting tweeters from Parts Express you need the Neo3 PDR. Their regular Neo3 won’t work. Also, it normally has a shallow back cup. Not the deep back cup Danny uses

This seems to be the part in question?

They do have all 3 types available. (open, shallow & deep)

Those are standard Neo3s not Neo3-PDRs. The only version of the Neo3-PDR they have listed is open back

Ahh okay. What're the differences between the standard and PDR models?
Nevermind, found my answer, it makes for better horizontal dispersion. lol

The type of the neo3's back makes a difference in a sealed box?

Yes. You don't want an open back tweeter in a box with a woofer. It needs to be isolated from the pressure of the woofer.

Theoretically, you could always make a custom cup for the back of the open PDR model, using similar dimensions. Tho the closer you are to its size and shape, the more accurate the response will be.

Ah! or separate it into different air space I'm guessing.

thanks - that makes sense

Correct. Otherwise the tweeter would be directly influenced by the cabinet pressure caused by from the woofer, which would lead to distortion, or in heavier bass tracks, almost no treble at all where it would act like a passive radiator, or possibly damage the diaphragm.
