Help me choose Speaks tucked back for classic Mc!

I need help finding speakers that can be tucked back fairly close to the rear wall without suffering too much for my master bedroom rig. I will consider monitors and smaller floorstanders.

This is for a real nice classic McIntosh tube pre/SS amp with vinyl, tube cd and tube fm for sources. I'm looking for a speaker to compliment this rig that has a sweet 'more involving' signature and is not overly analytical.

What do you think???

how about odyssey nightingales?  I think they'll have the sound you're looking for plus they're down ported so you can place them close to your wall.

If you want quality similar to your 1801's, your best bet is small sealed speakers such as:
* Dellon Acoustics EGO (uses Hiquphon OW2 and Focal woofer)
  You can buy the kit from http://www.zalytron.com/
* MBOW1 or CAOW1 (ported would be bigger box)
  http://murphyblaster.com
* Sealed AV1 from GR-Research
* BESL System 2 MT  http://www.bamberglab.com/s2mt.shtml

The EGOs are probably the smallest of the bunch.

Randog,

I just got a pair of VMPS 626R with regular caps from Marbles and set them up in my wife's office for Valentines Day.  They are paired with an ARC hybrid pre, an ARC tube amp and a Sony es cd player.  The speakers are set right against the wall and they sound very good.  I spent all afternoon Sunday setting things up.  On Monday, I get a thank you call from my wife for the flowers,  :D and then as an afterthought for the audio set up. :evil: Go figure!

Thanks! The nightingales are on my list! Plus, I like Klaus and would like to support him. I think they have a huge WAF but my wife wasn't enamored with the look... go figure. Am also considering the Epiphony... again, it's the wall thing I'm worried about.

I'm also considering the Spendor S5e (S3/5 SP1/2e) in the same $ ballpark and those I can get out and audition.  :)

Hey Al, long time!

My concern is the quality of the source material in this rig and that's why I was thinking 'more involving'. In other words, 'less revealing' of less than optimal source material. That makes me frightened of the OW1.  :scratch: I should take my Ellis and try them in there, eh? duh. I also have my GR-R AV-1's I should give a spell... as well as Norh 4.0's. However, it's still good to get a consensus based on your experiences.

You are the 2nd one to recommend the BESL System 2 MT . How did you hear (about) it? What's the buzz, man?

I'll plug the ports of the 1801's and AV-1's and give them a spin. In the meantime the suggestions here are great and appreciated.

These speakers can also be front ported and a little research there is justified as well. I do love the custom builds...

Just to give you another option, the Totem Arro.  Rear ported, but the mfr believes they will do fine close to a wall.

good luck,

I'll second the VMPS 626r's. I've only heard the RM 1's which are very similar but for the money it's a killer bargain and should at least be auditioned before you buy if at all possible.

I second the Arros, I have heard them as close as 12 inches to a rear wall, and that helps them flesh out the lower register nicely.  Good little speakers, if you have no lively cats or small kids - small footprint, and not resistant to tipping, unless filled with sand or shot.
