Check out these trance CD's:

Voodoo & Serrano - Cold Blood
William Orbit - The Best of Strange Cargos
Fluke - Risotto
Hallucinogen - Twisted
Paul Oakenfold - A Voyage into Trance
Warp Brothers - Warp Factor

Interesting mixes.  Don't know how these relate to 'trance' but these are part of the genre and are quite entertaining.

If you want an essentially unlimited supply of top-notch music go to www.freshlymixed.com.

It costs a couple of dollars a month to have access to the best, most current stuff out there, which you can download. All John Digweed's shows (of which 50% are guest DJ's). I have downloaded gig's of mp3's and have only listened to a fraction of them.

John Digweed is a progressive DJ, not trance. IMO, prog offers all the best aspects of trance, and eliminates the annoying, cheesy aspects found in modern (after 2000) trance.

Can't quite agree with you on the "cheese" comment, most progressive lacks the layering common to good epic or euphoric trance. While I do agree that there are commercial "cheese" tracks ala gigi d'agastino, there are many good trance tracks that are not progressive. I will admit however that i feel progressive to be boring and a pseudonym for house with some synth riffs. I'm not here to start a prog vs trance war, for that you can go to the best site on the net for trance and EDM  www.tranceaddict.com , which my friend owns and operates. I totally agree that 1999-2000 had some of the best tracks and 2002-2003 were prob best for vocals. The main thing to remember about most EDM is that one remix can be totally different than another (horrible or brilliant), so its all in the remix.

On a side note I think a good trance production can be unbelievable when it comes to soundstage and having the music engulf you, good producers manage to get this feeling out of crappy speakers and equipment at clubs, i can only imagine how it would sound on a pair of ribbons.

a couple tracks to try:

Armin-communication
ayumi hamasaki - whatever [ferry corsten dub mix]
rank 1-airwave
Libra pres Taylor-anomaly (calling your name) (ferry corsten remix)

Interesting how two songs both are from the 1999 era...rank1 is one of the best electronics songs ever produced, and Armin's track is (if it is the song I am thinking of with the repetitive vocal "somebody answer the phone") is IMO one of the worst..

Trance is the music that first got me into electronic music, and I still carry a couple of trance CD's in my main CD folder I use when I study etc.

Progressive can be boring, just as trance can be cheesy. There is a lot of overlap, with many "progressive" songs actually be trance, or having at least a strong trance element. Trance really is the genre of electronic music that gives electronic music a bad rap from the general community.

I personally tend to end my DJ mixes using tracks that are often classified as "progressive trance," using tracks often talked about in www.tranceaddict.com

Good trance does sound stunning on a good setup....but I have to say that after I moved to progressive, I have never looked back.

PJ you're thinking of Mario Piu- Communication (defintely a horrible track), conversely Armin- Communication is a top quality track (also from 99), here's a great current vocal track mike shiver-hurricane (mike shiver remix). I know tranceaddict well, the owner and I are good friends.
