Goodwill great for Classics
« on: 21 Jan 2020, 12:46 am »
Living in Middle Tennessee I have found that shopping at the two Goodwill stores is great for picking up classical music.  That is if you are interested in listening to it, which I am because my eclectic tastes run from Bruckner to Monk to Zappa.  So, when I start going through a stack of records and I find several Deutsche Grammophon records in mint condition my heart starts beating quickly. These will typically be overlooked by most record collectors who go through these stores.  In fact, I have found this the case in most thrift store shopping I have done, great classical finds, both in vinyl and cd's.  Am I the only one who has experienced this phenomenon?

Welcome to AudioCircle, Jazzman!

You're not the only one. I've snagged about 2 dozen really nice classical records at the two Goodwills near me in central NC. I check them a couple times per year. I got a perfect EMI boxed set of Beethoven Symphonies, Otto Klemperer, 9 disks for $4.50. A couple Fritz Kreisler LPs playing Beethoven and Walton concertos, and an early Simon Rattle recording is actually my best sounding LP. The popular and jazz is pretty well picked over but nobody knows what the classical stuff is.

Greetings & Welcome to AC Jazzman   :thumb:  Count yourselves lucky gents, every time I check my local store what few LPs they have look like they've been used as frisbees for the dog.

  • To whom more was given more will be required.

Welcome!

In our smallish town there is only one source for used CDs, a used book store.  Have went through their collection of thousands of discs before and only found a couple worth bringing home.  But now with CD quality streaming there's even less reason to waste time/money to shop there.

Welcome to the mob!

I've cut way back on buying LPs, but GW and thrift shops are great sources.  CDs, too. Found a handful of Chesky CDs a few months ago, and the occasional rare camera, especially at pet rescue stores.

Welcome to Audio Circle!  :thumb:

I’ve heard many stories of people finding amazing deals at such places but personally I’ve had no luck as such. Years ago someone told me estate sales are where they find all their best deals but I’ve have yet to go to one.
