BDP-3 Hard Drive Format
« on: 17 Mar 2020, 01:04 am »
I decided to pick up a 5Tb hard drive for my BDP-3.

According to the owners manual the preferred format for the disk is exFAT. However Manic Moose only allows me to choose FAT32 or EXT (really? circa 1992 or is it really ext2 or 3 or 4)...  So what now? I have no way of formatting an internal laptop drive outside of the BDP-3.

Just for kicks I decided to format FAT32 and it seems to have worked. I would prefer to stick with the standard recommendation of exFAT if there is a way to accomplish this using MM - unless there is no value in one over the other.

Curious, though, that there is now a "boot" folder on the drive and the readme document says I should not remove it or the BDP may not boot correctly. HUH? Why would an added drive suddenly now be required to boot? There was a small hard drive in this unit previously and I'm pretty sure it had no "boot" folder on it.

Cheers,
Robert

Yeah, this isn't right. I copied two albums onto the drive and hit Update. It found them and plays them, but I've had a message "Checking 10cc" at the bottom of the screen for over an hour. Really - checking two 10cc albums for an hour? When I dump the rest of my 4200 albums it'll be busy checking until the next millenia at that rate...

Anyway I see the usable space left is 2Tb according to MM, so that ain't gonna fly either.

I'll wait for the experts to weigh in and tell me what I need to do in order to get this right.

Cheers,
Robert
