Plywood OK for X-LS Encores?
« on: 16 Dec 2019, 01:47 am »
My local Lowes refused to cut down a 4x8 sheet of MDF for me so I went with some 3/4” ply. It’s good quality but I can tell it has voids as I cut into it. Will this be ok if I’m using no-Rez or do I really need to use either MDF or try to find solid core ply?

The only plywood I use is Baltic Birch. No voids. All plywood at the big box stores has way too many voids. Around here BB ply costs three times as much as MDF so it is cheaper to buy the MDF and throw away what you don’t need.

Fair enough. My issue was lifting/working with a full sheet by myself because it was so dang heavy. Also my vehicle isn’t big enough to fit a full sheet inside so I’d have to tie it in too which always makes me a little nervous.

I’ll check around to see if there’s any place other than Lowes or HD that sells 3/4” MDF and is willing to cut it and/or void free ply.

Really though, would I hear the voids if I just used what I have if it’s lined with no-Rez? I mean really?

It’s odd that Lowes won’t break it down tor you. Both Lowes and HD around here have panel saws and cut sheets down. The say two free cuts per sheet and $0.25 per cut after that. However, they have never charged me more for extra cuts. I usually have them break a 4x8 sheet down into roughly 4’ x 28” pieces. These fit into the backseat.

I agree. They were happy to cut plywood, just not MDF.  They said something about the glue messing up the saw which doesn’t make sense to me.

They just don’t like cleaning up the sawdust. I bet if you wondered out loud what corporate would have to say they’d change their tune.

To answer the question of "can you hear it". Dunno, no one  can hear through your ears.

Consider these factors: A well made, no sonic contribution box, is well integrated and damped. The easiest way to get there is MDF + No Rez. Theoretically, voids in plywood would act as small resonant chambers. Most hardwood veneer plywood has softwood core plys that are certainly less dense than hardwood or MDF. Baltic Birch has hardwood ply cores that are same as finish plys.

Where does that leave us in the real world? Generally, substitution of design materials has an effect. Is it audible to you? Dunno. I usually think in terms of "details matter", and that leads me to follow or improve upon known design criteria. Leaves nothing to chance, ya know?  But that's my way, doesn't mean it suits everyone.

I have zero knowledge of Big Box policies concerning cutting or concerns about how to transport so all the above should be taken with appropriate grain of salt for your situation.

In the end, words, words, words  :D

Don't over-analyze. If it matters at all, the effect will be negligible. Work with the plywood that you already have.

Instead of buying MDF, you will achieve a far better return by using that money to upgrade the crossover parts.

MDF is highly recommended. It is far less resonant and will sound better. It is also inexpensive. One sheet of it would easily build two pair or more.

And the expensive HDF?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardboard

Quote
It is similar to particle board and medium-density fiberboard, but is denser and much stronger and harder because it is made out of exploded wood fibers that have been highly compressed.[3] Consequently, the density of hardboard is 31 pounds per cubic foot (500 kg/m3) or more[4] and is usually about 50–65 pounds per cubic foot (800–1,040 kg/m3). It differs from particle board in that the bonding of the wood fibers requires no additional materials,[5] although resin is often added. Unlike particle board, it will not split or crack...

Thanks, I figured this would be the recommendation.
