SOLD - Dodd Audio Variable Gain Preamp
« on: 3 Dec 2019, 11:54 pm »
I am the original owner and have had it for about 7 years in a smoke free and dedicated environment. I am downsizing my system as I’ve barely had a chance to listen to it in almost 5 years. So, this preamp, and the other items I will list shortly, are ready for a new home.

Beautifully finished wood faceplate and was upgraded from stock configuration to include Sonicap platinum bypass caps and to add HT Bypass input. HT Bypass input can be operated while the preamp is off, so no need to put hours on tubes while watching movies.

This is a fantastic preamp that is transparent, dynamic and fast. It allows the sonic signature of the audio chain to fully shine through and responds very well to tube rolling, so you can tube roll it to exactly how you like it. There are numerous reviews on AC and other forums covering it positively. I heard the preamp in combination with Dodd amps and GR Research speakers at 2012 RMAF and the room sounded phenomenal.

What’s included
- Dodd Variable Gain Preamp with Sonicap Platinum Bypass caps and HT Bypass. 3 Inputs + 1 HT bypass, and two outputs
- A matched pair of Russian stock tubes - Electro-Harmonix 6H30Pi
- A pair of Mullard 6DJ8 ECC88 1969 Large O Getter
- Remote for volume control
- New and upgraded battery (Powersonic 18 amp hour battery). 1 month old.
- CTek Smart charger

I also have matched quad of Amperex 6DJ8 ECC88 Vacuum Tubes Orange Globe Holland tubes that I will include if bought at the asking price.

The unit is in excellent condition. I’d rate it an 8, mostly because of age and following cosmetic issues that I’ve tried to highlight in the pictures below.
- Two scuff marks on top part of the case. Hard to see in normal lighting.
- Small scratch on back edge of the wood faceplate, which is not visible from the front.
- While taking picture of the innards, I noticed a hairline crack in what looks like a plastic shell covering the components underneath. I believe it has been there all along, but not sure. In any case, it has had no effect on functionality.

Asking price is: $SOLD. Buyer will be responsible for actual shipping charges and for paypal fees (3%). Local pickup available in Chicago.

Please note the hairline crack on the plastic box towards rear of the image.

Yes, very nice pre indeed. I have one of these as well and love the option of adding gain when needed. It responds excellent to linear power supplies too!

Good luck with the sale for this beautiful preamp!

Thanks pwag. I've been going back and forth for many days on whether to list or not. Acquired all this gear after umpteen hours of research and loved it in my system, but it's just not getting much use lately. Best it goes to a new home. It will be missed.

Thanks Tomy2Tone! Variable gain was what got me looking into this pre initially. My primary amp has very high sensitivity (1V to full power), while another amp I was considering had a much lower sensitivity. This pre allowed me to drive either one easily and mate them with my digital sources.

I love my Dodd. The greatest upgrade I made was to use the 6H30DR Russian Tube. If you have the money do it

I heard those tubes in a buddy's system and they were amazing. But yeah, not cheap.

Thanks.
