B 60 question
« on: 16 Mar 2020, 01:01 am »
Maybe somebody out there in Bryston Land can help me:
I just picked up a B 60,and was planning to use the preamp section with my 3BSST.It replaced a fully functional Bryston BP 4.
I noticed an immediate change in volume output between the 2. The BP 4 seemed to have more gain. Any ideas? Is it supposed to sound that way,?
The B 60  preamp section had a very different sound than I was used to.Been a Bryston owner for many years, and am kinda puzzled.
Also, how much of an "upgrade" in the preamp section am I actually getting?
Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

I can't speak to the sonic differences between a .4 preamp and the B60 preamp section but I have owned and used the preamp sections of both the original B60 and B60 C series. The original B60 used a BP20 as a preamp section and the C series B60 used a BP6 as a preamp section. The C series did sound more refined than the original series and was very balanced across the frequency range (as was the original B60). I wouldn't say the B60's presentation was exciting, just very neutral. Maybe the .4 has a different sonic signature and that along with the differences in gain are what you are hearing. If you have a spl meter and can match the volume between the two when comparing that will give you a better idea of the differences.

Hi

The BP4 is a Balanced design so it has 6dB more gain than the preamp section of the B60.

What you are hearing is the difference in the Gain or Voltage out.  I assume you are using the RCA inputs on your 3B as well instead of the XLR balanced inputs.

Its a strange phenomena and is indicative of how we hear louder as better.

I love the B60 (old or SST) I have two of them and as integrated amp or preamp, it's for me the best on the market.  Less is more.  ;-)

I am with hififreak; I love the B60 and prefer it to the B135 integrated.  If my Copland ever konks out, I will hopefully buy a new B60 if Bryston is smart enough to keep making it.  It is one of the finest pieces of hifi gear ever made.
