Possible problem with a AV-3S
« on: 27 Jul 2005, 01:40 pm »
My AV-3 mains are overpowering my AV-3S center channel. I have the center at +10db on my receiver but sometimes I have trouble hearing dialog on 5 channel material. All 3 speakers are working on the AV-3S and the wiring checked out OK.  Is it possible that there is something in the crossover that is reducing the output? I have a H/K 225 receiver and I have tried small/large/none options. It sounds better with the no center channel setting.

The output level of those speakers match exactly. Other than the box design they are the same speaker. Sounds like a problem with the electronics to me.

Aren't you in the Denton or Decatur area? You can bring it up to be checked out if you like or the next time I head down that way I could stop in and take a look at it.

You could also swap it with one of your mains (swap the cables) and see if the output imbalance moves to the other speaker.

I live in Denton so if you are planning to be in the area let me know and maybe we can meet. I'll try switching the wires and maybe that will determine whether it is the speaker or the receiver.
Thanks for the quick reply.

I agree with Danny swap the cables first I think if nothing in the crossover it may be the center channel amp is a issue.
Not hard to test and sure it will be one or the other.

I switched the center and right speaker wires and the right was down on dB. I also tried a new wire with the same result. I assume this would indicate a bad center channel on the receiver. Damn, I was hoping it would be the speaker.   Anyway, thanks for the replies. Now I have a good excuse to upgrade the receiver   .

Very comon in reciever to loose a channel like that.

Do not know why but just gave up.
This is why I had a good idea.Myself i upgraded to the Marantz 6300 but still use it in the basement.
