I post on the other circles here but it slipped my mind!
Hey, I think I may have actually done some postings here in the distant past!
I live in Melbourne - I suppose I could have responded to the guy in some other poster who thought THE Melbourne was in the US but I couldn't be bothered!
I am slowly upgrading my HiFi - isn't everyone?!
Had a dedicated line (26 amp shielded mains cable, shielded five star, gold plated outlets, etc) put in recently.
Can explain how I did it all if anyone wants.
Latest HiFi 'thing' is a thorough upgrade of my Thorens TD125 (including painting it in iridescent electric blue) by the HiFi Guru.
He remarks that it is comparable to $15K turntables now!!!
Looks good in the pictures on his site but he has not been able to deliver it because of the Covid lock down.
Can't wait to hear it!
Would be interested to hear from any other Aussies here regarding what has been happening in their HiFi lives.
Do hope we don't have to wait another year for another posting in this circle!!

I've bought some new gear in the last year as a present to myself after surviving a divorce. 

Denon dp1200 - ortofon bronze 2m cartridge.
Spread spectrum technologies ambrosia preamplifier - 50% discount
Salk Sound Song 3's - bought second hand for 2.8k australian

I have far too much gear but I guess I'm too attached to sell anything at this stage

Hi Guys,

I just thought I'd show a couple of pictures.  I'm currently using a pair of old Nuforce s9 speakers with the following equipment:

Peach tree audio nova 150
Denon dp1200 turntable - ortofon bronze 2m cartridge
Bluenote De medici phono stage.



This is a little headphone setup that I put together.  The turntable is a Bluenote Piccolo and an ortofon 2m red and again the bluenote de medici phono stage (now replaced with a diy tube phono stage), red wine audio isabella preamplifier and sennheiser hd650's headphones.



What other equipment do you use?  I checked out the hifi guru and it looks like a great site for a turntable restoration.

I do have a headphone setup with Digital Frontend.
The Speaker setup has Analog-Vinyl Frontend.

I like it this way and everything gets the respect and attention they deserve.
In live in the west of Me and would happily entertain any visitors who would like to audition my system.
It’s not the most expensive but I have slowly upgraded it over a few years.
Iam currently tweaking the system by upgrading cables and Iam just amazed at the improvement the cables have bought to the listening experience.

Thanks for descriptions of your HiFi and your pictures guys.
I have Acoustat spectra 22 (electrostats) driven by a Quad 606.
Sounds great but I know there is a lot more room for improvement (read upgrades!).
It seems to me that everything makes a difference.
Got new carpet years ago in my lounge room where I used to have my HiFi before I got my own dedicated music room,
I was absolutely shocked by the difference the carpet made.
Same goes for the dedicated mains line.
Rod, I did not see your SST Ambrosia in the pictures.
How do you find it?
Did you get the blue one?
Very impressed with that discount.
You sure must know how to do a deal!
I am wondering about their mono blocks and their cheaper preamp down the track.
I have known about the Melbourne Audio club for years but never attended anything.
Is it worth going along to a meeting?
Did attend a DEQX night at Mark from StereoNet's house a few years ago,
Enjoyed it immensely.

Hi Bruce,

Most of my gear is being stored as my current place isn't big enough to use my monoblocks.  I've also got a Bryston turntable which I picked up for 2k reduced from 6k.  I couldn't resist it as I've always wanted a higher end turntable as I listen mostly to vinyl these days.

This is my main system minus the SST Ambrosia preamplifier.  The speakers are Salk Sound HT3's which need heaps of power.  Basically, I have 4 pairs of speakers (yes I know its a disease):

Salk Sound HT3's
Salk Sound Song 3's
Nuforce S9's
Osborne Eos





You might want to consider using Mike from Liquid Audio if you want to revamp the quad 606 he does great restorations of hifi gear.  I won't use anyone else as I've had 3 electronic repairers damage my gear in Australia.

How do you find those Ampzilla 2000 mono blocks?
They look like the blue ones but it is a bit hard to tell.
How do you find the Ambrosia pre amp?
Is it a blue one?
Thanks for the link to that guy who can revamp my Quad 606s.
I have always thought that there was more locked up inside my 606s just waiting to get out.
If I don't upgrade the Quads I will get that revamp done.
Would you believe I am thinking about SST but I do have a couple of other projects closer to the front of the cue.
Love the ribbons on your speakers.
Have a Halcro EC800 which I use for CDs & SACDs and an Akai GXC760D which I had refurbished by guy from StereoNet - he did a fantastic job and it sounds wonderful.
By the way I live in Essendon.
Yeah, I don't get rid of anything that is good and working.
Did throw my PS Audio power conditioner in my red bin recently though, after it started humming super loud!

Hi to all.

I used to live in Melbourne and still have a fondness for the place, though it's very different now to when I was there.

A significant part of my audio equipment also has Melbourne origins in the shape of a Hugh Dean tube pre-amp, the GK-1, which Hugh regrettably dropped from his range. I'm also still using one of Hugh's amps, the 55W Aksa N+, tweaked.

Various DIY speaker projects in the pipeline including a 4 way which will probably be way to big for my space but it's been fun to figure out. Active crossovers from Rod Elliot and a brace of amps from all over the place.

I can well understand why you don't want to get rid of the Salks Rod.

I just joined today... Ex Melbourne - now living in west NZ (Tasmania).

I don't think we have any Audio Clubs here... the last hifi shop in northern Tasmania shut down years ago... we (I) are on our own. 

Although support from Melbourne HIFI shops is pretty good!
