So I was introduced to the Dodd battery buffer was pleasantly surprised at how much difference it made with several modest speaker/amp combinations we tried.
To clarify, the one I heard today had the remote and was the smaller chassis.

I'm also looking for a used Dennis Had amp (probably a SEP) or possibly a VTA ST70...

I had a Dodd Battery Powered Preamp.  I sent it to Gary to get it upgraded with Mundorf Silver in Oil caps, additional Vampire RCA jacks, and converted to use the CTEK charger.  The preamp was truly outstanding and had a place in my system for almost a decade.
