Chromecast Audio -- Can't get it to work!
« on: 3 Nov 2018, 05:11 am »
I now have the Chromecast Audio dongle.  I also bought a mini-plug-to-toslink cable.  My Android phone says it's streaming.  I have no sound.  I've tried plugging the toslink into an optical input on my DAC (Emotiva XDA-2 Gen 2).  No joy.  I've tried plugging it into an optical input on my pre-pro (Emotiva UMC-200).  No joy.  What am I missing?

When you first set it up, using the Google Home app, did you hear the test tone?

You might also do a factory reset. Unplug the unit from power for a minute. Plug it back in. Hold the button on the unit in until the light turns white. The unit will then reboot. Set up the unit again using Google Home app. I would suggest leaving the unit connected to power for a few hours or longer in case there is a software update

You just may have a bad one.  Exchange it.  Could the cable be bad?  Are you trying to stream hi rez about 96K?

By the way, just bought a Roku Ultra for TV and the sound quality and picture quality are much better than the Chrome Cast it replaced.

TBH, when I posted my first query, I didn't know I needed Google Home.  Since then, I've installed Google Home.  But there's no test tone.  The dongle displays a green light, which may indicate that it's paired with the cell phone.

I'm trying to do audio streaming.  I don't want to turn on the TV for that.  Bluetooth audio works fine.

No hi-rez.  I have an Idagio trial account.  It does MP3 quality.  I think I can get hi-rez if my subscription goes permanent.  But that's not my issue right now.  I just want sound through the Chromecast Audio.

look closely at the edge of the unit. There is a small button there. You can also do a factory reset from the Google Home app.

The CA is not a bluetooth device.  It does not pair with your phone.  It uses wifi.  Both your phone and the CA must be using the same wifi network.  Follow the setup directions using Google Home and all should be well.

I mentioned Bluetooth only to verify that I can play Idagio through Bluetooth, i.e. I can get a signal to waft across the room, and the system can play it.

In other news, I pressed a "play" button in Google Home, and I got some very loud hip-hop "music."  So I think the Chromecast Audio dongle is working.  But, it appears to me that I can use Chromecast Audio only with the specific streaming services that are listed under Google Home.

That is correct. Unfortunately it is not a universal streamer, e.g. something that wirelessly streams all audio from a device. I do believe however that if you can get it to play in a Chrome browser you can cast it to the Chromecast Audio. So there are potential hacks for playing your music library.

It was working earlier today.  Not now.  Nothing I do gets sound out of the system.  I quit!

Man, I hear the frustration in your post.  But you CAN get it to work.  Because of your post, I started my 14-day free trial today.  Its reliably chrome-casting and I am enjoying the heck out of it.  So, thanks for making me aware.

Progress today.  I can stream through the Chromecast Audio dongle, using a cell phone (computer is another matter).  But working with Google Home is a struggle.  My experience so far has been that I have to tell Google Home to "play music," at which point I'm apt to hear very loud hip-hop "music" from one of the standard linked music sites.  Then I have to go over to Idagio to play the music I want to hear, which may or may not replace the hip-hop.  I cannot make Idagio my default streaming service, at least not within Google Home, which is limited to a certain list.  The Idagio site has its own issues, but online help from Idagio is unavailable on weekends.
