Steve Guttenberg of Cnet (a really nice guy by the way) just did a review of this ultra cheap system consisting of a Tripath amp and Dayton speakers.  Looks like a go to for many applications.

That's pretty cool, I've love to hear it.
My biggest problem, is that I have more components than rooms to listen to them in.  :|

This is good news for young music lovers or a second system,
it could even better without the tweeter and xover.

Most of these cheap amplifiers have spring loaded speaker terminals. Any ones with binding posts?

They mate perfectly with the spring loaded terminals on the cheap Dayton speakers.  ;)

Actually, that's a non-starter for me.  It would probably increase the MSRP by $4 or less for either to have cheap binding posts.

No clue, maybe ask Steve Guttenberg.

There are so many cheap chip amps out there I don't know how anyone would keep track of them, much less make value judgements on their relative sound quality.  I ran across this one in literally five seconds of search, it has binding posts and the well regarded 3116 chip.

Not the same. One uses TPA3116, the other Tripath 2020. The TPA is more powerful and I think has better sound quality. TPA and Tripath are not the same or related. Once you hit the $50+ there are a zillion options better than Gutternberg's amp but Parts Express don't have many of them so I get why he made that choice. I appreciate his review. It's a good gateway option instead spending the same money on one of those crappy single speaker bluetooth solutions.

The Lepai amp is now $24.88, amazing.  I'd ditch the tone controls, otherwise probably as good as you can get at that price point.

Yeah, the tone controls probably don't help much; but they're presumably expected by the market segment this amp is aimed at.

Wow, $24.00 ? You couldn't DIY something comparable for that price.... That moves the total cost to more like $78...  :o

I'm sure it's not 'high-end' by any stretch, but this is the kind of setup that would potentially get young people interested in moving beyond crappy-sounding 'smart' speakers for their home music listening. (I've never heard one that sounds good; it's just a question of how much one-note bass they put out.) Gotta get up off your (_Y_) to change the volume though- unless you hook a BT receiver up to the input...

I bought my grandson a pair of those Dayton speakers a while ago. Not bad for the money, but honestly I'd find a pair of used Polk Audio Monitor 4 or 5s instead next time.

I bought one for $16.88 a few years ago. Time to get it out and see how it drives my Classico I's.
