Model T or A1 - listening height
« on: 28 Sep 2018, 05:23 pm »
Hey folks

I recently bought a pair of Bryston A1's (love them so far) and looking for some suggestions or advice on listening height....and setup.

As I fiddle with A1 speaker placement in my listening room, i am observing a slightly better balance when my ears are about 12-16 inches above the normal height of my listening chair.   I've been thinking of building a platform to raise up my chair but somehow feel this is a bit extreme - mainly in the sense of room esthetics (not that that's important to me - but...it is to family)....

As an alternative, i thought i'd tilt the speakers (vertical axis) towards the listening position.

Has anyone out there with Model T's or A1's observed similar findings, and if so, any suggestions for setup?

Much thanks, TJ

Hi TJ

The A1's have very wide horizontal and vertical dispersion and once you move back about 1 meter the polar frequency response will integrate quite well.

So I am a bit surprised that raising and lowering your head gives that much of a difference in the overall spectral balance?

Thanks James. I am still tinkering with setup - and yet to attach the outriggers... looking forward to that!  But ya, slightly better (or different?) balance to my ears by raising listening height -  not night and day. I'll keep mucking around with setup.  The distance from listening position to speaker plane is about 10 feet straight ahead...
Curious if other folks have thought about this in their A1 setup..

Hi James

Finally am able to listen to the A1's again. We've had visitors for several days...great to see them arrive....great to see them go...music time!!

Pretty sure I figured this out.

When I raised my listening height last week, i actually brought myself away from the back wall by about 2 feet. That's the difference I'm hearing.   My 'normal' listening location is backed up against a wall (this has got to change).
To double check, when i raise my height AND maintain proximity to the back wall...it sounds the same.

You were bang on the money. That's why we have experts! Love this forum.  :thumb:

Thanks James.

TJ.
