Titan setup issue

I have had my Titan II  for almost two years now.  I first used the Theater input, and after reading here about the benefits of using the L/R inputs, I switched to those (my sub cable is a stereo cable, so I used both L & R inputs).

I recently got a new processor and Panoramas (replacing Sapphires).  So I recalibrated the system with each new purchase.  Initially, while using the L/R inputs, I had no issues.  Shortly thereafter, I was listening to a CD and noticed the bass was lacking.  I checked the subwoofer, and it wasn't playing.  I then checked the processor setup, and it was setup Ok.  But when sending pink noise to the sub, I got nothing (sub was powered on and gain control had no effect).  Problem?

I switched the cable to the Theater input (using one end of the stereo cable), and now the sub functions.  But I have to set the sub output to -10db (the lowest possible setting) to get the sub to be anywhere near matching the output of the other speakers.  To make it sound anywhere near good, I had to crank down one of the filters (all the way down).  I am crossing over at 80Hz (in the processor).

I have never had any of these issues previously (and quite happy with this great sub).

So:
1.  Could I have caused a problem with the L/R inputs?  I don't normally listen at extreme volumes, so I don't know what else might have caused this problem.

2.  The issue regarding what I explained with the Theater input I imagine is processor related, no?

Thanks for any help with this.

I can’t imagine that you could have “damaged” the left and right inputs . . .I’ve never seen that happen. . . but I’ve also learned that anything is possible

We need to verify if the problem is with the left-right inputs or something before that. Use an RCA cable that you know is good and hook it up directly from an output you know is working, (doesn’t have to be sub), to the left or right input. See if you now have output from the sub . . .you could even use audio output from a CD player for this. Start with the volume on the sub ALL the way down to prevent major heart failure 

The Theater input is “full bore”, the gain is wide open. This is why you have to adjust to -10 on the processor

Thanks Mike!

I can do as you suggest, but wouldn't the fact the Theater input does work (with the same cable) conclude all is Ok prior to the L/R inputs?

I did mention my subwoofer cable is a stereo cable.  It is an Ultralink "subwoofer" cable.  RCA on one end connects to sub-out on processor, and two RCA's on the other end.  I will try using just the L input and then just the R input and see if the problem still exists.  And if you thinks it's worth trying, I will use another cable and test as you suggested.

I just want to verify that there really is something wrong with the Left-Right inputs. In thousands of units, I've never seen these inputs just stop working . . . although like I said, anything is possible. At least three times in the last couple of months we've brought something back here for warranty repair to find there was nothing wrong: All were cable or hookup related. I just want to save you the time and trouble of sending back for repair :)

Just a thought, on the back of the Titan there are line level inputs as well as jacks for High pass outputs. I believe the inputs are the 2 upper jacks and the outputs are the 2 lower jacks. Are you sure you are plugged into the inputs and not the outputs?

Also, which processor are you using. I used to have a Sunfire processor, and when listening to CD's in stereo you had to tell it to use the sub.

I'm feeling REALLY stupid!  I don't know for sure, but after changing things in my system around, I bet I plugged the cable into the high pass outputs (not the line level inputs).  I will check tonight and verify.  If that's the case, I apologize for the wasted time here!

My bad!!!

I had indeed used the high pass outputs.  With all the money I have invested in this setup, maybe I should invest a few bucks on a couple clues!

Sorry for the wasted (but appreciated) efforts in your replies (Mike and Eric).  Maybe someone else will read and avoid doing this same thing!
