Hafler assembler in the early 1980's - DH110 and DH500. Interested in these, and some new tube amps to build. General discussion.

Welcome Rob :thumb:
Interesting, how do you would describe the Hafler sound?

Utilitarian?  - I always liked these two pieces, as I built them out of the box. Bought them from a place that used to be in Hyannis,MA, called "Sound II". From a guy named Jim.

Now I have two DH 500's and will bridge them for gigantic amounts of VC melting power. Just for the fun of it.

I'm after a tube setup, and was thinking of buying (2) M-125 Monoblock kits:

I cant disagree, SS amps should use just one pair of output transistors for less power and price.

Greetings & Welcome Rob    :thumb:  Built a 101 & 200 in the late '70s. Solid gear, and loved the sound of the Pre. Had a cold solder I couldn't find in the Pre, so traded many years later for a 110 factory build. It was sweet, but also had a bad connection, which after 2 trips back to the factory I gave up on. Still have the 200 chassis which Frank VanAlstine built into a Omega 250, later tweaked to it's now Insght 250 status. Still runs my office system without missing a beat.  8)

Thanks for the welcome!

What would be the "best" (read, simple, not too expensive and/or over the top) modification for the 110? And who is the best in this arena? I understand there are +20 caps to replace, and then other work to do. I'll look the forums over. Just relating what I am currently after.

Nice to be a member!

Many diyers like to change the caps and keep the same transformer usually a cheap toroidal, in SS amps I like change the transformer to a bigger hi quality laminated if possible hi-B, second level is more capacitance.

Rob, just in the fwiw category, I asked Frank (VA) many years ago about updating/fixing my 110. He said it was pretty much a lost cause due to all that was involved (like the 20 caps thing). Not trying to discourage you as I always loved it's sound, but it's probably not going to be an easy project. You might email or call Frank for some recommendations on info, he's a no BS guy, so he'll share what he knows regarding what would be involved. Good luck.  :D
