Newb with 4960 issues/?????'s

Hello all.

Recently purchased a 4960 and am enjoying CD and SACD performance in stock form. I'm having some issues with DVD-A. I can't seem to access the player menu or the disc menu for DVD-A discs. I get a DVD-V menu wich won't allow access to 2 channel layer/playlist and when I hit the menu button during playback I get circle/slash instead of disc menu. Am I missing something?

In the player setup menu, what does DVD play default to?

with DVD-A discs .. theres too many variations LOL some are DVD-A on one side and DVD-V on another (e.g Blue Man Group Audio)

Unlike my previous player (Pioneer 578A) there is no manually selectable option for DVD-A vs DVD-V. It appears that it is up to the player to auto-detect. This is happening on all of my DVD-A discs, none of which are two sided. They mostly have two layers and playlists, one each for multi channel and 2 channel. Because the player is defaulting to DVD-V and the associated menu options for it, I can only access the 5.1 playlist. My interest is in the 2 channel layer and playlist.

I was able to reach Toshiba tech support and they knew less about my player and it's interaction with DVD-A than I did. They suggested returning it for a new one.

ugh... I'd say get something else except that none of the support people at any manufacturer knows as much about their players as the consumers :(

The lack of support can be very frustrating. I'm starting to think that this is normal behavior for this player. I've found at least one other person on another forum who's had the same issue. It may just be that the 4960 doesn't recognize DVD-A well or the discs need to be flagged a particular way in order for it to work correctly.

And people wonder why DVD-A/SACD have trouble getting off the ground! Cross compatibility seems weak at best.

That and a lack of content. Cross compatibility is at the hands of uni player manufacturers and probably not even a requirement in most cases; I feel its just that these few companies have decided it best not to get caught in the format war instead of deciding its better for the consumer :)

My 'old' Pioneer 655A hasn't choked so far except on ONE disc (Queensryche Empire DVD-A, which it wont recognize at all, not event he V side...)
