veneer technique suggestions
« on: 15 Sep 2018, 02:06 pm »
Hi. I am building a center channel speaker and have the MDF box just about complete and ready for veneering.  I've used some 2-part epoxy on a few edges where I had some damage. What do you find to be best for veneering? PSA, Heat-lock glue and iron on, Titebond glue and iron on? I like the concept of glue and iron on, but am concerned there would be adhesion issues on the parts that are patched with 2 part epoxy. I'm also open to contact cement, but don't know if that would have issues with adhesion where I've patched the cabinet.
Thanks for your input!

Heat Lock will do what you want and be relatively easy and somewhat forgiving. Of listed options I think it'd be your best bet. How big are the epoxy patches?

I agree with Peter, I have had good luck with heat lock, however it has been known to pull seams apart and/or split the veneer after a timeframe in a few instances as reported by other users on this board.  I have had mixed results with contact cement, seems to work better with paper backed veneer than raw veneer, however that is based on my limited experience with it.

Good Luck!

Hi. Thank you both for the quick feedback.
Peter, the patches are 3/4" x a few inches in a few spots. I used a pocket hole jig to connect some of the panels and the joints came out of alignment in the process. I didn't realize it until it was too late. I used regular wood putty where I could. In the cases where the wood putty wouldn't bond due to being such a thin layer, I used the 2 part epoxy.

The Heat Lock will be dependent on mechanical surface bond on the epoxy portions. Although mostly cured by the time stated on label, my experience is that epoxy continues to cure for a week or more. That said, I'd give some time between epoxy and veneer and make sure to abrade surface for bondage. Wait, not bondage, that might give the wrong idea. How about adhesion
