Speak-O-Phone
« on: 25 Jun 2018, 11:45 pm »
Hi,
I noticed a discussion on here from last year about copying metal 78s and wonder if anyone was successful. I have a family one that needs to be transferred directly to digital or cd. Any advice is appreaciated on who can do this for me as its a personal message from my grandfather to my great grandmother in the the 1930s. He died in 1955 and my mom could hear his voice.

Welcome Konnie; sorry I cannot help you with your 78 conversions, but I'm sure there are some here "in the know" who, if they don't see it posted here, will tend to it if posted in one of the more specific circles...

Might I suggest contacting either the Library of Congress or the Smithsonian? There are projects to save historical audio recordings. They probably have the hardware to play it and digitize it for you if you are willing to let them add the recording to their audio archive. If you only want to extract the audio, they might do it free in exchange for the original media. Let us know what happens.

I have some historical CDs from Traditional Crossroads label mastered from wax shellacs which sports beautiful musical sound quality. Recommended.
