I bought my B60 used.  Had it not had 14 years of warranty left on it, I wouldn’t have bought it.  Had Bryston not been the wonderful company they are who stand behind everything they put their name on, I would’ve bought something else.  I remember when I was looking into buying it, I had the seller email me the serial number and manufacturing date code.  I came here, PM’ed James, and got a great reply.  Made my decision a no-brainer.  No other company I know of does anything close to this.

My B60 is an original non-SST B60.  Or at least it was :) .  A few years later I saw a thread here where James was discussing the upgrade possibilities from non-SST to SST.  My particular B60 was in a gray area of being able to upgrade it or not, so he referred me to Mike Pickett.  I spoke to Mike on the phone, and $125 and 2 weeks later, I had a B60 SST.  What company does that?  Mike informed me the new SST outputs would have a 20 year warranty, and the rest of the B60 would keep the remainder of the warranty (12 years at that point).  Broken record here... what other company does that.  My initial warranty will run out around October or so.  If I have any problems after that I know it’ll be taken care of the right way by the right people and for the right price; not a “you need a new amp.”  Again...

When I bought my B60, it was between a used B60 and a new Naim Nait 5i.  I rolled the dice and bought the B60, and brought it to my Naim dealer who’s a fantastic guy.  He let my listen to it side by side with the Nait. Both amps were great, but the B60 was better in every way.  He had nothing but praise for James and company, and he wasn’t a Bryston dealer.  He even advised keeping the B60 due to sound quality, build quality, and Bryston’s remarkable customer service.  Not that Naim is a slouch in any of these areas by any means.

Once the house is paid off and my daughters’ college tuition is paid, I’ll buy a new Bryston pre amp and power amp.  Until that day comes, which is quite a while away, my B60 will continue to be the great workhorse it’s always been.

Not sure if I’ve said it before or not, but thanks James & Company.  Keep doing what you’ve always done.  No one else does what you do nor as well as you do it.  You guys (and gals) are what every company should strive to be.

Stu, thanks for this well written testimonial. It's very helpful for people like me who are considering their first "real" (non BUC-1) Bryston purchase.

Cool story Stu. I've had a few issues with my BP20 preamp and the Bryston boys (JT and MP) have been awesome.  And the lovely Melissa is great too! I love the bryston swag! My preamp is in the shop now and I can't wait until it comes back with a clean bill of health! Thanks Bryston  :thumb:

ps. I owned the Naim Nait 5i back in 2013 or so. It's a tidy little unit - but no comparison to Bryston resolution and control over the bottom end, IMO. cheers!

Stu,

don‘t you have a Rega cd player in your system?? if yes, did you ever consider to try a Bryston player?
the BCD-1 is sometimes available at a good price on the used market...

You’ve got a great memory, al.  I had a Rega Apollo, then I traded it in and bought a Rega DAC.  Still have it and the same Apple TV gen 1 feeding it.  I won’t go back to a CDP, no matter how great it sounds nor the price.  Well, maybe if I got my hands on a BCD-1 for next to free.  I’ve heard the BCD-1 and BDA-1.  And I’m trying to forget they exist :)  They sounded so great, but money is so tight right now that I can’t really afford anything.  And I love my Rega DAC.  There’s just something about it I can’t describe.  I hate the cliche, but it sounds so turntable-like to me.  As cliched as it sounds, it gets everyone’s foot tapping when it’s on.

The BDA is no doubt better in every way.  And it would match my B60 better too.  But the Rega is way more than good enough until my finances improve.

But I need to upgrade the ATV 1.  With every remote update, it gets buggier.  Lately, it won’t let me out of a playlist when I start one.  I can’t skip tracks, shuffle, etc.  Really, really aggravating.  I’d go the BDP pi route, but again... finances.  A 5 year old and 7 year old cost so much more than I ever imagined.  Just when I’ve got some money set aside, someone’s got a birthday, 1st communion, grows 6 inches overnight and needs clothes, stuff like that.  I’m not complaining nor would I have it any other way.  Priorities.  Growing up sucks sometimes though.

Rega pays special attention to the analogue stage of their digital products. I like their sound too. I don't think you're missing a whole lot with the Rega DAC. A Bryston DAC would have superior resolution and dynamics and would sound more "lucid" but you'd lose a bit of warmth you're getting with the Rega.

Cheers!

Not with a BDA-1 in AES. Has a touch of warmth and yet still very transparent, imo.
Makes my digital sound like pure analog without the restricted dynamic range.   :thumb:

cheers Antun.

The way I listen nowadays, I wouldn’t be missing anything at all.  To be honest, my current system is totally overkill.  I could easily get by listening to SiriusXM through my TV speakers, which I seemingly do more often than not.  I rarely get enough quite time to sit down and enjoy my system.  It’s all good though.  One day my kids will be old enough to be too cool to play with dad.  When that day comes, I’ll drown my sorrows with my music and some good beer.  :)

I’m envious.  I honestly don’t know what I’d do with a day all to myself.  I haven’t had one at least since we found out my wife was pregnant with our first.

I’d probably con the people that I go to karate with to do some sort of all day sparring session.  Then come home and crank the stereo to 11, and drink a ton of beer.  Basically, I’d revert to my college days.  Opening the door drunk and in my boxers when the police show up because I’m too damn loud was hilarious while I was in college.  At 41, it’ll just be pathetic.  I guess it’s a good thing that my wife and kids don’t go anywhere for any real length of time :)

5 and 7 is such a great age.  My girls are so much fun.  Except when they’re screaming, of course.

I technically purchased my 4B-ST used in September of 2001.

I bought it from Mr. Curry at Audio Video Environments in Franklin, TN.   They were an authorized Bryston dealer at the time.  The one I purchased was one of their demo units.

It's still bringing me lots of musical joy!

Al, can we ask what you were cranking in the attic on your B60R?

hi, NHSkier!

...sadly i don't have a B60 at home - for sure an amp that i'd like to listen to one day.
i have the BCD-1, BDA-1, BDP-1, SP2, BP26, BP 1.5, 4B SST, 3B SST² and 875HT at home. however, i prefer rock music, hip hop and reggae music :banana piano:.
so if Alex is alone at home like these days...it can get loud :thumb:

greetings,

al.

I am a huge fan of Bryston amps.  I purchased my first 2.5B-SST2 as an open box from an authorized dealer.  I bought 3 more pre-owned Brystons after hearing the 2.5B-SST2.  I had to get rid of 2 other branded amps that I thought sounded great until I bought the first Bryston.  My main theater is now powered by 3 Brystons:  front 3B-SST2, center/surround/rear height 9B-SST2, front height 2.5B-SST2.  My secondary system is powered by a 16 year old 9B-SST Ultra THX.

I bought the SST since I rarely use that system.  If it ever needs to be repaired after the warranty runs out, it will be sent to Bryston for repair.  I may even inquire about updating to SST2 specs.  The previous owner took care of it and it looks almost brand new!  Even an older Bryston made the previous amp sound like mud as all I could hear was muddy, muddy bass and not real good mid and high range.

I want to replace my bedroom AVR now and go to separates and get another Bryston!
